School Starts Tuesday, September 4 for VBCPS Students
When you're a parent-on-the-go, the last thing you want to worry about is how to keep your children safe and entertained when they're not in school. Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation provides high-quality and affordable Out-of-School Time programs sure to meet your needs! Our programs are fun, creative, and designed keep your child active and well-supervised. Best of all, our programs are located very close to your home and are easy on your wallet.
Preschool Programs
We offer licensed recreation center-based preschool programs that provide children with the opportunity to explore, examine, and discover developmental skills while enabling independent thinking and hands-on activity.
Programs Offered at SchoolsWe conduct before school programs at many elementary and middle schools. We also operate after school programs at every elementary school in Virginia Beach! These programs emphasize the importance of physical activity, and combine high energy games with play time. Events such as talent shows, special guests and tournaments help to make these programs extra special. Programs Offered at Recreation Centers Just like the programs we conduct at the schools, the recreation center after school programs are high-energy. But mix in the recreation center amenities like the swimming pools, extra large gyms, sportwalls and game rooms, and you know your child will have a blast!
Bonus! Recreation Center Membership As an added convenience, Out-of-School Time participants in our school-year program will receive a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership. This Out-of-School Time bundled membership grants access to any of our recreation centers between Sept 1, 2012 and Aug 31, 2013. |

We're Throwing a Beach Bash at Mount Trashmore Park!
Friday, August 17 | 7 - 10 pm | Mount Trashmore Park
Break out the beach balls and sunglasses as we turn Mount Trashmore Park into an island paradise on Friday, August 17! Grab a cool drink, relax and put yourself on island time. Exhilarating sounds of steel drums and horns by musical group Caribbean Steel will have you feeling like you're in the tropics. This free concert begins at 7 pm so bring your beach blanket or chair and get your island rhythm going. Children's activities, corn hole and other beach games will be on-hand. We'll have delicious food available for purchase and all the makings of a great Beach Bash right in the heart of the city! Free admission and free on-site parking!

Swim League Sign-Ups Begin August 11
Calling all swimmers ages 6 to 17! Winter swim league sign-ups begin on Saturday, August 11 for all recreation center teams. Online registration will be available via EZreg or you can register in person at any rec center.
New to the winter swim league? Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation offers an intramural winter swim league with emphasis on swimmer development and fun in a low-key competitive environment. Each team will swim regular season and championship meets during a season that runs from November to February. Teams practice twice a week under the supervision of experienced coaches, building competence in each of the four competitive strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly) as well as learning starts and turns.
Note: Due to Bow Creek Recreation Center's closure, Bow Creek's swim team will use Great Neck's pool as their home location. |
Competitors Wanted for SK8R Bash!
Saturday, October 20 | 8 am - 5:30 pm | Mount Trashmore Skate Park
It's back! Our action-packed skateboard competition at the 24,000 square foot Mount Trashmore Skate Park takes place Saturday, October 20. Complete with big airs, board grabs and other raw tricks, this contest runs alongside fun activities and rockin' live music. Registration is underway for anyone who wants to compete in the skateboard competition.
Competition Information
Registration Cost: $25 Event Day Registration: $30, if space is available
- Helmets are required; elbow and knee pads are recommended
- Applications accepted on first come, first serve basis until categories are full; space is limited
- Registration status confirmed by email
- Competitors receive contest t-shirt
- Prizes in each category
- Parents must sign for participants under age 18
- Proof of age may be required
Contest Format
Each competitor will be given a :30 second intro-run, and then placed in a 10 - 20 person Jam Session. The competitors from each category will be placed in a final jam. Divisions and schedules are listed on the registration form. Sign up today! |
Reminder: Rec Center Summer Drop-In Programs for Kids
It's been a hot summer so far, but the kids can beat the heat at our rec centers! Most centers have game rooms for kids that have a combination of table games like billiards, foosball, table tennis and air hockey as well as video games and board games. Our large recreation centers also have indoor playgrounds in the game room for ages 3-12. Each game room has scheduled program hours when the game room is available and staffed. The program hours and amenities for each center are available here.
Use of the game room does require a recreation center membership or day pass. Note that children age 5 & under must be directly supervised by someone age 16 or older at all times. Youth age 6-8 may participate during scheduled program hours until 8 pm as long as there is someone age 16 or older in the building. After 8 pm, children under the age of 12 must be directly supervised by someone age 16 or older. |
Save the Date for Artisans in the Park: September 8 & 9
September 8 & 9 | 10 am - 5 pm on Saturday & 10 am - 4 pm on Sunday | Great Neck Park
Explore the works of over 75 artists and craftsmen during the 37th annual Artisans in the Park, Art and Craft Festival - all in the serenely secluded backdrop of Great Neck Park. This two-day event is now in September, offering attendees the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy Virginia Beach's early autumn weather while enjoying the local and regional artists displaying, demonstrating and selling original art and fine craft wares.
Artists & Craftsmen
A variety of art and fine craft styles are represented, including pottery, metal and glass work, photography, jewelry, drawing and paintings, and sculpture. All work is of original design.

For the Kids!
Free ID Cards: Children will have an opportunity to have a free picture ID Card made on site, compliments of the Virginia Beach Mason Lodge, District 56.
Boundless Playground: The impressive park playground features play equipment which allows access for children of all ages and abilities.
Free Clay Play: Kids can play with clay on Saturday, 11 am - 4 pm & Sunday, 12 pm - 3 pm. A variety of food concessionaires will be selling delicious items including, hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage, pitas and more! Smoothies, lemonade, kettle corn, ice cream and even funnel cake will be available too.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures
Bow Creek Recreation Center will close on August 25 for a long-term modernization project. Expected re-opening is September 2014.
Great Neck Recreation Center will be closed August 27 through September 2 for annual maintenance. The pool will remain closed through September 9.
All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed Monday, September 3 for Labor Day.
Bayside Recreation Center will be closed September 10-16 for annual maintenance. The pool will remain closed through September 23.
Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed September 24-30 for annual maintenance.
Princess Anne Recreation Center will be closed October 8-14 for annual maintenance. The pool will remain closed through October 21.
Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one! |
