Friends are Free at All VB Rec Centers in July!
As part of our celebration of July as Parks & Recreation month, all Virginia Beach Recreation Center members can bring a friend to the rec center each day this month for FREE!
As long as they are accompanied by a member, friends can enjoy unlimited visits for the whole month! If your child has a membership, he/she can bring a friend along to enjoy the game room activities, swimming pool and gymnasium. The child's parent or guardian will need to sign the Liability Release on the Day Pass Application in order to utilize the facility, so be sure to have this completed ahead of time.
Adults are encouraged to bring a friend as well! Plan a workout together or go for a swim. Friends can also participate in group fitness classes by using a group fitness sampler or with the purchase of a punch card. |
Lessons Emphasize Progressive Swimming
Children are not like peas in a pod. They vary when it comes to learning to swim. Swimming skills are being learned in a new environment (water) and require lots of practice. The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program is divided into separate levels from 1-5. When a child completes all the skills in one level, he or she is ready to move to the next level. Emphasis in our swim program is on student progress. We will teach your child to progress in their swimming technique and will move them onto the next level of instruction when they have demonstrated the skills and maturity necessary to handle the next level class.
At the end of the session, each child will receive a progress report to let you know what was accomplished within the progression and what skills still require practice. It is not uncommon for a child to repeat a level several times before moving on to the next level. Participants are encouraged to attend open swim and sign up for additional lessons to improve their swimming skills. Like any other sport, you get better at it as you practice. It is also important to remember that your child is improving and having FUN!

Getting a Boost from Our Volunteers
For the City of Virginia Beach, the Office of Volunteer Resources promotes volunteerism within our government agencies to support the municipal services valued by citizens. With about 18,000 volunteers throughout the organization, it takes alot of coordination from certified Volunteer Resource Managers in each department. The Aquatic Unit is pleased to congratulate Jennifer Le Blanc for becoming a certified Volunteer Resource Manager.
For the past fiscal year, Aquatics benefitted from 3,758 hours of volunteer time! For Aquatics, the bulk of volunteers consist of family members assisting during competitive league events and a core of youth trained as Water Safety Aides and Junior Lifeguards. In addition to her regular job duties, Jennifer trains, schedules, supervises and counsels these youth volunteers. She naturally falls into the role of mentor and encourages others to establish similar relationships with local youth. Jennifer's commitment to the volunteer program has enhanced the experience each of our volunteers, which helps us provide better services to patrons using our pools.
Interested in becoming a volunteer for Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation? Opportunities are listed on our Volunteer webpage along with the point of contact for each area. |
