Budget Impact on Therapeutic Recreation Programs
The adoption of the city's budget will have some impact on services offered by the Therapeutic Recreation Programs Unit. In order to meet our target budget, we had to reduce the number of part-time staff hours. These reductions resulted in changes to services: elimination of the All-Stars After School Program for ages 5-12 and reduction in the number of summer Around Town programs. Our existing Champions After School Program continues to meet the needs of our participants ages 14-21. The two Around Town programs for the summer will serve adults ages 22 and older who are not involved in our summer camp programs.
There is a slight increase in fees for our swimming programs. This is needed to offset the cost of providing American Red Cross programs, an impact felt across the country. There will also be a slight increase in fees for the Around Town programs to help offset the cost of transportation for outings.
Our goal is to continue to provide the highest quality of programs and services to our customers.
Staff in the Spotlight: Julie & Tracey
Julie Townsend started her journey down the Therapeutic Recreation path in 2002 at the age of 11 as a volunteer with the Camp Explore and Extended Care programs. As soon as she was old enough, Julie started working as a part-time employee. Not long after, she became a leader for summer camp and various other programs. We can say without a doubt that Julie has worked in every Therapeutic Recreation program offered throughout her employment.
While Julie was working with TR, she was also attending Old Dominion University, seeking a degree in Recreation and Tourism Studies with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation. This spring, Julie completed her internship at Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center (WWRC) in Fishersville, Virginia. Now a graduate of ODU, Julie recently passed her Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) exam. She will continue her career as a full-time staff member with WWRC and will be a great asset to their clients. We'll miss you, Julie!
has worked with Therapeutic Recreation Programs for more than eight years. She has worked in nearly every program offered by TR. She always brings a smile and creative spirit with her and is willing to help in any way. Tracey's favorite program is the Camp Explore summer camp. She said, "It gives me great joy to witness the success of the participants in all programs. It is exciting to help the participants put props and costumes together for the talent show and see everything magically come together at the end."
When Tracey is not working with TR, she is taking classes and working hard towards her degree at Virginia Wesleyan College. Tracey is proof that hard work pays off. She was recently inducted into three Honors Societies: KDP (International Honors Society for Educators), ODK (National Leadership Honors Society) and AƩɅ (National Honor Society of Adult Learners). Congratulations on all of your hard work!
Be On the Lookout: After School Program Registration
Tuesday, August 14 | 5 - 7 pm | Kempsville Recreation Center, Room 103
Our Champions After School Program is an opportunity for middle and high school students with special needs (age 14-21, currently attending middle or high school) to participate in instructional and recreational activities after school. Each participant will work towards the achievement of individual goals through activities that include crafts, group games, drama, music, fitness, swimming and community outings.

There is a $45 registration fee and the program costs $275 per session (sessions last approximately 4 weeks). The maximum number of registrants is 12. The program meets at Kempsville, Monday through Friday from 2:00-5:30 pm during the school year.
