Summer CatalogLook for our Summer Programs & Activities Catalog to be posted online this Saturday, May 5! Registration for these programs begins the same day at 9 am.

 

Our new catalog is full of classes and programs to keep you and your family active throughout the summer. Sign your child up for camps, swimming lessons, art classes, dance & fitness classes, and outdoor & athletic programs.

 

Printed catalogs will be available in mid-May.

 

2012/13 School Year Registration

Before and after school, preschool and kindergarten programs will begin registration for the 2012-13 school year on May 19 at 9 am. Register early and have the peace of mind that your child will be in good hands while you're at work. Conveniently located in nearby schools and recreation centers, our programs will keep your child's body and mind active!


Register Online via EZreg | Must have client barcode and family pin. These are provided at time of in-person registration and can be received in person with photo ID at any of our six community recreation centers.

Bonus! Bundled Memberships

As an added bonus, Out-of-School Time participants in our school-year program will receive a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership. This membership grants access to any of our recreation centers between Sept 1, 2012 and Aug 31, 2013.

Bring Your Pooch to K-9 Karnival!

Saturday, May 12 | 10 am - 3 pm | Mount Trashmore Park  

 

Canine lovers and their furry friends are invited to Mount Trashmore Park on Saturday, May 12 for a day dedicated to dogs. Pound puppies to the purebred can come paw-to-paw with numerous canine demonstrations, competitions, displays and more at K-9 Karnival! All dogs (with up-to-date inoculations) are encouraged to attend this free event with their owners! 

 

Activities for this year's event include:

 

2012 Hyperflite® Skyhoundz® Local Championships | Registration at 10 am, competition from 1 - 3 pm | Unleash the champion in your dog during this ever-entertaining contest with amazing displays of canine grace, athleticism and agility. This disc-catching event is open to all owners and dogs. 

 

The Hairier Jump Jets Flyball Team | Watch the fur fly as the team holds demonstrations throughout the day! Flyball is a fast moving team sport for dogs, involving a racing course with hurdles, a spring loaded plate, and flying tennis balls. 

 

Agility Course Competition | Registration from 10 - 11 am, competition at 11:30 am | With jumps, hoops, tunnels and more, kids age 5-12 can compete with their pups. All dogs must be on a leash and retractable leashes are not permitted. Presented in partnership with Family Dog Club, Inc. After the competition, for a minimal fee your dog can try out the course.

 

21st Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show | Registration at 10 am, contests from 10:30 am - noon | This is 15 seconds of fame for you and your favorite mutt! Does your dog love peanut butter? Have him or her compete in the new contest for 2012: the "GREAT Peanut Butter Lick-Off."  Additional contests include Tail Wagging, Barking, and "Stupid Pet Tricks." Participation is free and prizes will be awarded!

 

Rabies Shot Clinic by VBSPCA | 10 am - 2 pm | A must for every dog! Offered onsite at the "Neuter Scooter" by the Virginia Beach SPCA, veterinarians will provide rabies shots at a reduced rate of $10.

Youth Employment Opportunities for Ages 14-21

 

Youth EmploymentDo you know a young person who is looking for a summer job? They may be eligible for a job with the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). This program provides jobs and workplace readiness skills for court-involved youth and/or those residing in the city's more challenged neighborhoods. These young people, who often lack the skills required to obtain employment and succeed in the workplace, can now include solid work experience and real skills on their resumes. Workplace readiness and financial literacy training will be required for all participants.
 

Youth Service Corps
The Youth Service Corps (YSC) is for youth ages 14 and 15. The YSC is a partnership with Virginia State Parks. These youth will have an opportunity to work seven hours a day for a three week period (July 23 to August 10) in Virginia State Parks. Each participant who completes the program will receive a $500 stipend. To apply: complete and submit an application for the Youth Service Corps by July 2.
 

Youth to Leaders Program

Through the Youth to Leaders program, youth ages 16 to 21 may be placed in an agency for an eight-week period, June 25 to August 17. Previous placements have included a variety of city and community agencies such as Parks and Recreation, Human Resources, Emergency Communications and Citizen Services/311 Division, a community radio station and more. These youth may work up to 35 hours a week and will be paid $7.50 an hour. To apply: complete and submit an application for the Youth to Leaders Program by May 16.

Back 2 Nature CampersKayaking, fishing, hiking and archery are just a few of the activities that your child can experience at Back 2 Nature Camp this summer! This camp was created to give kids the chance to explore nature and try different forms of outdoor recreation in a safe, fun environment. Many studies have shown that being in nature has a positive impact on the mental and physical health of our children. 

 

Back 2 Nature Camp is offered Monday-Friday from 9 am to 5 pm at:

 

Princess Anne Rec Center | June 18-22 | $160
Great Neck Rec Center | July 23-27 | $160

Bayside Rec Center | August 6-10 | $160

 

We also offer summer camps in schools across the city, as well as at most recreation centers. Some of our other specialty camps include Magic Camp, Tennis Camp, Thrills & Chills Camp and Soccer Camp! Aarghh! Watch "The Goonies" with Real Pirates in the Park

Friday, May 18 | 7:30 - 10 pm | Mount Trashmore Park    

 

piratesAvast, me hearties! Head over to Mount Trashmore Park on Friday, May 18 for an evening of pirate-themed activities and a chance to interact with real pirates at our Pirates in the Park event! Kids will enjoy pirate-themed crafts provided by the A.C. Moore of Birchwood Shopping Center. All ages can catch a showing of "The Goonies" and join the adventure to find One-Eyed Willie's "rich stuff" in this 1985 classic film.


Wear your best swash bucklin' gear for plenty of fun with the whole family! Activities begin at 7:30 pm. Food will be available for purchase, and the movie sets sail at sunset. New Chick-fil-A dessert cookies FREE to the first 1000 event attendees.

 

 

Reel in the Big One at FREE Family Fishing Clinic!

Saturday, June 2 | 8:30 am to 1 pm | Munden Point Park, 2001 Pefley Lane

 

Catch of the DayGo fish! Spend a morning at Munden Point Park learning to fish with your kids (ages 5-14) at our free Family Fishing Clinic. Don't miss the chance to team up with experienced fishermen for guided instruction on beginning fishing skills.This program is always a hit with parents and kids alike.
 

Advance registration is required. Register under parent or guardian name at any Virginia Beach Recreation Center or online via EZreg. Limited to the first 150 participants. A parent or guardian must be present for every 4 children.
 

Fishing poles, tackle and bait are provided, if needed. Event will be held rain or shine. Hot dog lunch included.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 

 

All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on May 28 for Memorial Day.

 

The pool at Princess Anne Recreation Center will be closed May 19 through June 17 for maintenance.

  

Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
