Celebrate Native American Culture 

Saturday, April 28 | 11 am - 6 pm | Mount Trashmore Park  

 

Pow WowCome out to Mount Trashmore Park this Saturday, April 28 for the 12th Annual American Indian Pow Wow: A Celebration of Life for all People. Experience Native American culture as it is showcased through spirited music, intertribal dancing and drumming, and American Indian cuisine at this interactive and educational event.

 

Learn about various dances and regalia worn while taking the opportunity to participate in intertribal dancing. There will be over 25 exhibitors with sales of authentic and Indian-inspired arts and crafts, with educational displays of American Indian artifacts. American Indian foods as well as other festival foods will be available for purchase.

 

Master of Ceremonies: Clark Stewart (Chickahominy)

Arena Director: Chief Thomas Lewis (Meherrin)

Head Male Dancer: Seth Adkins (Chickahominy)

Head Female Dancer: Leah Fortune (Rappahannock)

Host Drum: Stumptown Singers (St. Stephen's Church, VA)

Guest Drum: Nassaw Nation (Hollister, NC)  

 

This free event opens at 11 am for educational and craft displays/sales. The grand entry will take place at noon followed by American Indian drumming, dancing and activities, until the closing ceremony at 5:45 pm.

Help Your Kids Create Memories at Summer Camp  

School-Based Summer Camp Registration Begins Saturday, April 28 at 9 am  

 

CampersBefore you know it, school will be out and summer will be upon us. Ensure your child has a fun summer filled with exciting games and activities, special events, field trips, and more! We offer camps in schools across the city, as well as at most recreation centers. We also offer a variety of specialty summer camps, including Back to Nature Camp, Magic Camp, Surf Camp, Ropes Camp, Soccer Camp and more! Give your kids a summer experience that they'll never forget! Learn more about our summer camps.

 
Registration for school-based camps will begin this Saturday, April 28 at 9 am. Recreation center and specialty camp registration began in March and continues as space is available. Register your child for camp online via EZreg or in person at any recreation center.

Go Kayaking at Stumpy Lake Community Day 

Saturday, May 5 | 2-5 pm | Stumpy Lake Natural Area (4797 Indian River Road)  

 

Stumpy Kayak LaunchJoin us for a Community Day at the new Stumpy Lake Canoe/Kayak Launch. Single and double kayaks will be available free of charge to paddle this beautiful 278-acre lake. Located just after the causeway from Indian River Road near the entrance to the Stumpy Lake Golf Course, the launch opened in November 2011 and provides first time-ever water access to Stumpy Lake. Kayaks will be accessible for 20-minute excursions; no experience necessary.

 

Also take the opportunity to explore the shared-use trail at Stumpy Lake Natural Area before or after hitting the water, or bring a lawn chair to relax and take in the scenery. This canoe/kayak launch is fully ADA compliant, and citizens of all abilities are invited to join the activities on the water.

 

 

Bring Your Pooch to K-9 Karnival at Mount Trashmore

Saturday, May 12 | 10 am - 3 pm | Mount Trashmore Park  

 

Canine lovers and their furry friends are invited to Mount Trashmore Park on Saturday, May 12 for a day dedicated to dogs. Pound puppies to the purebred can come paw-to-paw with numerous canine demonstrations, competitions, displays and more!  All dogs (with up-to-date inoculations) are encouraged to attend this free event with their owners! 

 

Activities taking place at the K-9 Karnival include:

 

2012 Hyperflite® Skyhoundz® Local Championships | Registration at 10 am, canine disc competition from 1 - 3 pm | Unleash the champion in your dog during this ever-entertaining contest with amazing displays of canine grace, athleticism and agility. This disc-catching event is open to all owners and dogs, regardless of breed, size or experience. Register your dog to participate and receive a free competition disc to take home.

 

Canine Rescue Organizations | Over 15 canine rescue organizations will have educational displays and canine activities. If you are interested, many will have dogs on site for adoption.

 

Exhibits | Commercial exhibitors will showcase a wide range of pet-related products and services. Food and drink will also be available for purchase.

 

New in 2012: The Hairier Jump Jets Flyball Team | Watch the fur fly as the Hairier Jump Jets Flyball Team holds demonstrations throughout the day! Flyball is a fast moving team sport for dogs, involving a racing course with hurdles, a spring loaded plate, and flying tennis balls. 

 

Canine Demonstrations | The Greater Atlantic Rescue Dogs (GARD) will give a demonstration of search and rescue techniques at 11 am on the main field.

 

Agility Course Competition | Registration from 10 - 11 am, competition at 11:30 am | With jumps, hoops, tunnels and more, kids age 5-12 can compete with their pups. All dogs must be on a leash and retractable leashes are not permitted. Presented in partnership with Family Dog Club, Inc. After the competition, for a minimal fee your dog can try out the course.

 

21st Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show | Registration: 10 am, Contests: 10:30 am - 12 noon | This is 15 seconds of fame for you and your favorite mutt! Does your dog love peanut butter? Have him or her compete in the new contest for 2012: the "GREAT Peanut Butter Lick-Off."  Additional contests include Tail Wagging, Barking, and "Stupid Pet Tricks." Register at the show arena on the day of the event. Participation is free and prizes will be awarded!

 

Rabies Shot Clinic by VBSPCA | 10 am - 2 pm | A must for every dog! Offered onsite at the "Neuter Scooter" by the Virginia Beach SPCA, VBSPCA veterinarians will provide rabies shots at a reduced rate of $10.

Aarghh! Watch "The Goonies" with Real Pirates in the Park 

Friday, May 18 | 7:30 - 10 pm | Mount Trashmore Park  


piratesAvast, me hearties! Head over to Mount Trashmore Park on Friday, May 18 for an evening of pirate-themed activities and a chance to interact with real pirates at our Pirates in the Park event! Kids will enjoy pirate-themed crafts provided by the A.C. Moore of Birchwood Shopping Center. All ages can catch a showing of "The Goonies" and join the adventure to find One-Eyed Willie's "rich stuff" in this 1985 classic film.

Wear your best swash bucklin' gear for plenty of fun with the whole family! Activities begin at 7:30 pm. Food will be available for purchase, and the movie sets sail at sunset.
 

 

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 

 

The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will close at noon, Saturday, May 5 and reopen at 6:30 am, Monday, May 7 for a minor ladder repair.

 

All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on May 28 for Memorial Day. 

 

The pool at Princess Anne Recreation Center will be closed May 19 through June 17 for maintenance.

  

Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
