Celebrating Special Olympic Athletes

Beach BlastOwl Creek Tennis Center recently hosted the 2012 USTA/Virginia Beach Blast on April 28. With almost 30 Special Olympic Athletes and over 70 volunteers, the event was a huge success, despite starting under cloudy skies. Using a "unified" format in which a Special Olympic Athlete paired with a volunteer, the teams played in super set, round robin style matches.

Matches were also conducted for some newer athletes using the smaller, adaptive 36' courts. In addition to the on-court doubles play, USTA/Virginia provided games, t-shirts and music to make the entire event festive for everyone!

Check out some great photos from the event!

Pro Tip: Keep Your Head in the Game
by Owl Creek Staff

One of the most common causes for unforced errors is lack of balance. An easy way to ensure better balance is to stabilize your head. Many players follow the ball with their head instead of with their eyes when it enters and exits their strike zone, and this results in poor balance. By keeping your head steady, you are much less likely to pull away from the ball at contact. Follow the ball with your eyes and pretend as if you are balancing a book on your head and you will make fewer errors.
