Staff Recognized by Virginia Lifeguard Association
Members of the Bow Creek Recreation Center Aquatic Staff were recently recognized by the Virginia Lifeguard Association for two team efforts: one to assist a woman who suffered a seizure in the locker room, and another for rescuing a male patron who seized in the pool and submerged. Thanks to the quick response by our aquatic staff members, both patrons are now doing fine. Team members Jeremy Haywood, Bonita Teaford, AJ White, Julie Batakis, Andrew Sweeney and Karina Montes received the 2011 Virginia Lifeguarding Association Water Rescue and Medical Response Commendation. Congratulations on a job well done!

Be Sun Safe Year Round
Spring has certainly arrived in Virginia Beach and we've been lucky enough to enjoy some beautiful sunny days. Remember that even though we're just beginning spring, you still need to take steps to protect yourself from the sun. While sunburns are often talked about at the start of summer, sunburn can happen any time of the year. The best way to prevent sunburn is to know how to protect you and your family from the sun. Here are some tips from the American Cancer Society:
1. Cover up. Wear clothing to protect as much skin as possible. Keep in mind that if you can see through a fabric, UV rays can get through too.
2. Use sunscreen. Be sure to read the label, apply generously and reapply as directed. Use SPF 30 at a minimum or go higher for increased protection.
3. Wear a hat. A hat with a 2- to 3-inch brim all around is ideal because it protects areas such as the ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp that are often exposed to intense sun.
4. Wear sunglasses. Ideal sunglasses should block 99-100% of UV rays. Look for labels that say "UV absorption up to 400 nm" or "Meets ANSI UV Requirements."
5. Limit exposure. UV rays are strongest when the sun is high in the sky, usually between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm.
