Shake Off the Winter Blues at Shiverfest!  

Saturday, December 3, 4 to 8 pm | Mount Trashmore Park

ShiverfestThe temperatures have dropped but that's no reason to stay indoors this winter! Bring the entire family out to Shiverfest on Saturday, December 3 at Mount Trashmore Park. The thrills and chills begin at 4:00 pm and continue until 8:00 pm.

See the park transformed into a winter wonderland with holiday goodies and festive music. The first 50 children to arrive at the Experience the Fun tent will receive a lighted kite to fly on top of the mountain. There will also be free holiday crafts for the first 250 kids!


Santa arrives at 4:00 pm on a 1941 restored fire truck provided by Khedive Fire Brigade. Bring your camera to take a photo with Santa before his big night! Free admission and onsite parking.

Parent Resource Night to Discuss IEPs 

Thursday, December 1, 6 to 8 pm | Kempsville Recreation Center

studentDoes your child have an Individualized Education Program (IEP)? Do you think your student needs an IEP? Attend Parent Resource Night on December 1 to hear Dr. Brenda Reid from the Virginia Beach City Public School's Parent Support and Information Center discuss new regulations that may affect your child. Topics that will be discussed include: 

  • An overview of the new IEP regulations;
  • How IEPs are developed;
  • What is and what is not permissible in an IEP; and 
  • How to create a teamwork-based relationship between parents and staff so the child receives the maximum benefit.  
Parent Resource Nights are designed to help parents learn about upcoming changes and trends that may affect their child. Parent Resource Nights are free and open to the public; reservations are not required. Simply show up, share and learn! For more information, please call 474-8492.

No School? No Worries! Camps Available at Rec Centers


OST CampersVirginia Beach schools will be closed for Winter Break on December 27, 28, 29 & 30. If you have to be at work, have your child spend the day at one of our recreation centers where they're sure to have a blast!

Our camps run from 7 am to 6 pm and the day is filled with fun activities like sports, games and arts & crafts. If your child is currently enrolled in one of our before or after school programs, the cost is $25 for the day. For those not currently enrolled in a program, the cost is $35.

We've joined with the elves and reindeer to make arrangements for Santa Claus to call your lil' ones (age 3-8) from his North Pole headquarters to find out who's been naughty and nice, but you've got to make a reservation! Pick up a form at the front desk at Princess Anne Rec Center. Forms must be submitted no later than December 4. Calls will be made on December 8-9, between 7:00 - 8:30 pm, so be waiting by the phone!

Pizza with Santa (age 8 & under)
Have some yummy pizza with Santa! Bring your camera for a special holiday photo with the big man. Pizza is served to the children only. Register by December 2! Cost $6

Holiday Fun with Santa (age 3-5)
Come spread the cheer in our snow covered bounce house and make a holiday themed craft while enjoying some seasonal snacks. Children will also get a chance to take their picture with Santa. Everyone is sure to have a jolly good time! Cost $6

The pool at Seatack Recreation Center will be closed for renovations until mid-December.


All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on the following days: November 24-25 for Thanksgiving, 12 pm, December 24 through December 26 for Christmas and January 1-2 for New Year's.  


Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
