Mount Trashmore Park before September 6!


America Is Your Park
encourages families to get active outdoors in parks across the country and vote to help their favorite win one of three recreation grants made possible by the Coca-Cola Live Positively initiative. So, if you like biking, running, skateboarding, walking your dog or taking the kids to play, there's no better place to enjoy these activities than at Mount Trashmore Park.  

 

You can help Mount Trashmore Park by: 

  • Voting as many times as you can! Voting is unlimited.  
  • Uploading photos and videos from the park to LivePositively.com
  • "Checking in" to Mount Trashmore Park via Facebook Places 

You can also help by spreading the word about the contest - urge people to vote by reminding park visitors, sending emails, posting a status on Facebook or sending a message on Twitter about why you love Mount Trashmore Park.

 

Mount Trashmore could be crowned "America's Favorite Park" this summer. But it's up to you - so get outdoors, play in the park and don't forget to vote!

New VBgov.com Website to Launch on Monday, August 29 

 

WebsiteBig changes are coming to VBgov.com on August 29! The City of Virginia Beach's website has been completely redesigned based on direct feedback and requests from our users, as well as the city's desire to implement technology improvements. Some notable additions and enhancements to the website include:   
 

  • An interactive calendar of events that can be filtered based on your preferences
  • A media center containing video and photo galleries 
  • Mobile accessibility that is compatible across all major smartphone formats
  • A visually appealing design that highlights our beautiful city through the use of imagery
  • An interactive Map Center featuring layering capability and an improved graphic interface 
  • A design that is compatible with multiple browsers on multiple platforms
  • An improved search with auto-suggestions as you type

SkateboardingIt's back! Roll out for some nose-grinding action at our action-packed skateboard competition at the 24,000 square foot Mount Trashmore Skate Park. Complete with big airs, board grabs and other raw tricks, this contest runs alongside fun activities and rockin' live music. Registration is underway for anyone who wants to compete in the skateboard competition.

Competition Information 

Registration Cost: $25 (Event Day Registration: $30, if space is available)

  • Helmets are required; elbow and knee pads are recommended
  • Applications accepted on first come, first serve basis until categories are full; space is limited
  • Registration status confirmed by email
  • Competitors receive contest t-shirt
  • Prizes in each category
  • Parents must sign for participants under age 18
  • Proof of age may be required

Contest Format

Each competitor will be given a :30 second intro-run, and then placed in a 10 - 20 person Jam Session. The top 8 from each category will be placed in a final jam. Divisions and schedules are listed on the registration form.  

Friday Free For All - Movie Night: Willy Wonka 

Friday, August 19, 7:30 - 10 pm at Mount Trashmore Park

Every third Friday from May until September, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation will be hosting Friday Free for All, a collection of family-friendly movie nights and concerts in the park complete with themed games, activities, music and fun for everyone!

 

Join us at Mount Trashmore Park Friday, August 19 for a showing of "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" (Rated G, 100 minutes). Bring out your inner Oompa-Loompa and enjoy this childhood classic film with oodles of candy-themed activities and yummy chocolate treats to enjoy. Movie begins at sunset; food will be available for purchase.   

Free admission and free on-site parking!

Enjoy Music and Fireworks at Patriotic Concert!

Friday, September 16, 6 - 9 pm at Mount Trashmore Park

 

FlagJoin us for the fifth and final installment of the summer event series Friday Free for All on Friday, September 16 for a Patriotic Concert at Mount Trashmore Park.

 

Celebrate our military heroes with this rockin' military salute while enjoying the sunset over Lake Trashmore. The Blue Aces Ensemble of the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band will entertain the crowd with their fast-paced performances and variety of musical styles. The Blue Aces have performed for military and civilian dignitaries including the President of the United States, our warrior airmen and joint-combined forces deployed in support of the Global War on Terror.

The concert begins at 6 pm and fireworks will light up the sky at 8:30 pm (rescheduled from July 4). Food will be available for purchase; free parking and admission.

2011/2012 School Year Programs - Register Now!

  

When you're a parent-on-the-go, the last thing you want to worry about is how to keep your children safe and entertained when they're not in school. Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation provides high-quality and affordable Out-of-School Time programs sure to meet your needs! Our programs are fun, creative, and designed keep your child active and well-supervised. Best of all, our programs are located very close to your home and are easy on your wallet.    


Programs Offered at Schools

We conduct before school programs at many elementary and middle schools. We also operate after school programs at every elementary school in Virginia Beach! These programs emphasize the importance of physical activity, and combine high energy games with play time. Events such as talent shows, special guests and tournaments help to make these programs extra special.

Just like the programs we conduct at the schools, the recreation center after school programs are high-energy. But mix in the recreation center amenities like the swimming pools, extra large gyms, sportwalls and game rooms, and you know your child will have a blast!

Bonus! Recreation Center Membership

As an added convenience, Out-of-School Time participants in our school-year program will receive a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership. This Out-of-School Time bundled membership grants access to any of the six centers between Sept 1, 2011 and Aug 31, 2012.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 

 

The pool at Seatack Recreation Center will be closed for renovations beginning August 22 and lasting approximately three months.

 

Great Neck Recreation Center will be closed for maintenance from August 29 to September 5. The pool, weight room and racquetball courts are expected to remain closed until September 19 for additional maintenance and ceiling painting. 

 

All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on Monday, September 5 for Labor Day.

Princess Anne Recreation Center will be closed for maintenance September 12-18. The pool is expected to remain closed through October 2.

 

Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
