Enjoy Art and Entertainment at Artisans in the Park

Saturday, August 6, 10 am - 5 pm & Sunday, August 7, 10 am - 4 pm at Great Neck Park

Artisans in the ParkExplore the works of over 80 artists and craftsmen during our 36th annual art and craft festival, Artisans in the Park - all in the serenely secluded backdrop of Great Neck Park (2513 Shorehaven Drive). This free two-day event offers you the unique opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy Virginia Beach's summertime weather while discovering the originality of local and national artists displaying, demonstrating and selling their original art and fine craft wares.

You'll enjoy a wide array of art forms at the festival including pottery, metal and glass work, photography, jewelry, drawings and paintings, and sculptures. All work is of original design with the artists on site. There are artisans who throw pots, turn wood, paint pictures, blow glass, forge metal, and photograph beautiful landscapes and wildlife, including beach and historic settings in Hampton Roads.

Stop by the Main Stage for live music featuring Southside Harmonica Club, saxophonist Johnny J, and Celtic musicians Gan Ainm. Children will enjoy the free activities on Saturday including music, interactive crafts, storytelling and face painting. The Virginia Beach Mason Lodge District 56 will be onsite offering free child identification cards. The playground at Great Neck Park was recently renovated as well, allowing better access for kids of all ages and abilities.

A variety of food concessionaires will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage, pitas and more! Smoothies, lemonade, kettle corn, ice cream and even funnel cake will be available too.

Parking is available at Cox High School (corner of Great Neck Road & Shorehaven Drive), with free shuttle bus service to the nearby park.

Seatack's Pool to Undergo Renovations

Seatack PoolThe pool at Seatack Recreation Center will be closed for renovations beginning August 22. While there is no definite time frame to modernize Seatack Recreation Center, which opened in 1997, maintenance will be completed to extend the life of the pool facility:

  • The fiberglass pool shell will be replaced.
  • The pool filter will be replaced.
  • The diving board will be replaced.
  • Portions of the deck will be retiled.
Renovations are expected to continue through November 2011. During this time, the swimming pool will be closed, but all other areas of Seatack Recreation Center will remain open for use. Update on Recreation Center Lobby Renovations

The lobby renovations at Bayside Recreation Center are almost complete. The traffic flow through the lobby has changed to clearly direct customers to the front desk area. The entrance doors are sliding doors, which are better suited to the high traffic. And improved lighting and seating in the lobby will make observing swimming lessons and swim meets more comfortable.

Construction on Great Neck Recreation Center's lobby began on Monday to complete the same renovations. After those renovations are complete, the lobby at Princess Anne Recreation Center will be renovated; this work is anticipated to begin in September.

The recreation centers will be operating as normal during these renovations, with classes and programs scheduled as usual.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures

The pool at Seatack Recreation Center will be closed for renovations beginning August 22 and lasting approximately three months.

Great Neck Recreation Center will be closed for maintenance from August 29 to September 5. The pool, weight room and racquetball courts are expected to remain closed until September 19 for additional maintenance and ceiling painting.

All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on Monday, September 5 for Labor Day.

Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
