When you're a parent-on-the-go, the last thing you want to worry about is how to keep your children safe and entertained when they're not in school. Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation provides high-quality and affordable Out-of-School Time programs sure to meet your needs! Our programs are fun, creative, and designed keep your child active and well-supervised. Best of all, our programs are located very close to your home and are easy on your wallet.

Programs Offered at Schools
We conduct before school programs at many elementary and middle schools. We also operate after school programs at every elementary school in Virginia Beach! These programs emphasize the importance of physical activity, and combine high energy games with play time. Events such as talent shows, special guests and tournaments help to make these programs extra special. 
Programs Offered at Recreation Centers
Just like the programs we conduct at the schools, the recreation center after school programs are high-energy. But mix in the recreation center amenities like the swimming pools, extra large gyms, sportwalls and game rooms, and you know your child will have a blast!

Bonus! Recreation Center Membership

As an added convenience, Out-Young Boyof-School Time participants in our school-year program will receive a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership. This Out-of-School Time bundled membership grants access to any of the six centers between Sept 1, 2011 and Aug 31, 2012.

Enjoy Art and Entertainment at Artisans in the Park
Saturday, August 6, 10 am - 5 pm & Sunday, August 7, 10 am - 4 pm at Great Neck Park

Artisans in the ParkExplore the works of over 75 artists and craftsmen during our 36th annual art and craft festival, 
Artisans in the Park - all in the serenely secluded backdrop of Great Neck Park (2513 Shorehaven Drive). This free two-day event offers you the unique opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy Virginia Beach's summertime weather while discovering the originality of local and national artists displaying, demonstrating and selling their original art and fine craft wares. 

A wide array of art forms comprise the festival including pottery, metal and glass work, photography, jewelry, drawings and paintings, and sculptures. All work is of original design with the artists on site. There are artisans who throw pots, turn wood, paint pictures, blow glass, forge metal, and photograph beautiful landscapes and wildlife, including beach and historic settings in Hampton Roads.

Stop by the Main Stage for live music including smooth jazz, oldies and easy listening. Children will enjoy the free activities on Saturday including music, interactive crafts, storytelling and face painting. The playground at Great Neck Park was recently renovated as well, allowing better access for kids of all ages and abilities.

A variety of food concessionaires will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage, pitas and more! Smoothies, lemonade, kettle corn, ice cream and even funnel cake will be available too.

Parking is available at Cox High School (corner of Great Neck Road & Shorehaven Drive), with free shuttle bus service to the nearby park.

Friday Free For All - Movie Night: Willy Wonka 

Friday, August 19, 7:30 - 10 pm at Mount Trashmore Park

Girl with LollipopEvery third Friday from May until September, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation will be hosting Friday Free for All, a collection of family-friendly movie nights and concerts in the park complete with themed games, activities, music and fun for everyone!


Join us at Mount Trashmore Park Friday, August 19 for a showing of "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory" (Rated G, 100 minutes). Bring out your inner Oompa-Loompa and enjoy this childhood classic film with oodles of candy-themed activities and yummy chocolate treats to enjoy. Movie begins at sunset; food will be available for purchase.

Free admission and free on-site parking!

Fireworks Rescheduled for September's Patriotic Concert

Friday, September 16, 6 - 9 pm at Mount Trashmore Park


FireworksGood news! The July 4th fireworks have been rescheduled! We'll light up the sky as the finale to our Patriotic Concert on September 16 at Mount Trashmore Park. The event starts at 6 pm with a musical salute to our military heroes and the fireworks show will begin at 8:30 pm. Be sure to mark your calendar!

Final Day for Youth Football and Volleyball Registration football player

Organized athletics are offered through the City-Wide Athletic Office in conjunction with volunteer Recreation Associations for youth 10 years old through 18 years old and attending K-12 schools. The final youth football and volleyball registration day for many associations will take place this Saturday, July 16. Sites and times are available here. Practice will begin in August and games begin in September. Recreation Associations will charge a player registration fee and the sports offered vary by area.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 


The pool at Seatack Recreation Center will be closed for renovations beginning August 22 and lasting approximately three months.


Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
