Join Us for Our July 4th Celebration! 


July 4Celebrate America's independence with your family and friends at Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation's Annual July 4th Celebration at Mount Trashmore Park!  
Texas Roadhouse's Andy Armadillo and the acclaimed country line dancers will kick off the evening with live entertainment at 4 pm. Learn how to line dance to popular country songs, get your picture taken with Andy and participate in the free giveaways. Free children's activities, games and bouncing inflatables will be at Shelter 3 beginning at 5 pm.  


We're featuring a "Salute to the Military" with main stage performances by the rock ensemble of the U.S. Fleet Forces Band, Four Star Edition from 6-9:30 pm! Our booming fireworks display will begin at 9:30 pm.
While you're there, sink your teeth into some of the best festival foods, including: hot dogs, hamburgers, BBQ sandwiches, chicken pitas, Italian sausages, and more!
This event has free admission and limited onsite parking will be available - $5 per car, $10 bus/RV.

Dance the Night Away! Friday Free for All: Salsa Concert

Friday, July 15, 6-9 pm at Mount Trashmore Park, 310 Edwin Drive


DancingEvery third Friday from May until September, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation will be hosting Friday Free for All, a collection of family-friendly movie nights and concerts in the park complete with themed games, activities, music and fun for everyone!


Join us Friday, July 15 for a Salsa Concert at Mount Trashmore Park. Spend a summer evening at the park listening to the sizzling sounds of Tumbao Salsero Orchestra. The 11-member band will keep you moving all night long with Latin rhythms that include Salsa, Merengue, Jazz and Bomba. Tumbao Salsero has entertained thousands of fans at concerts throughout Virginia including Latin Fest and Norfolk Harborfest®.


The concert begins at 6 pm and food will be available for purchase.


Free admission and free on-site parking!

Youth Football and Volleyball Registration 

football playerGet your kids involved in sports! Organized athletics are offered through the City-Wide Athletic Office in conjunction with volunteer Recreation Associations for youth 10 years old through 18 years old and attending K-12 schools. Youth football and volleyball registration will take place on July 9 and 16. Sites and times are available here. Practice will begin in August and games begin in September. Recreation Associations will charge a player registration fee and the sports offered vary by area.

Play Ball! Fall Softball Registration Approaching


Softball PlayerCity-Wide Athletics Fall 2011 Adult Softball team registration will be July 25-29. The team franchise fee is $500. Men's, women's and coed leagues will be offered. New this year, we're also offering a Men's 50 & Over league. Registration information will be posted on VBgov.com/sports in mid-July. You can also get on our mailing list for a team registration form by calling the City-Wide Athletics Office at 358-0458.


A few notes about registration:

  • Registration is taken on a team basis at the City-Wide Athletic Office (4001 Dam Neck Road). Each team pays a franchise fee at registration.
  • Participants must be 18 years old or out of high school.
  • Games are held at various ball fields throughout the city.

Register early! Leagues are subject to close-out prior to the last day of signups.
Save the Date for Artisans in the Park

Saturday, August 6, 10 am - 5 pm & Sunday, August 7, 10 am - 4 pm at Great Neck Park


Artisans in the ParkExplore the works of over 75 artists and craftsmen during our 36th annual art and craft festival, Artisans in the Park - all in the serenely secluded backdrop of Great Neck Park (2513 Shorehaven Drive). This free two-day event offers you the unique opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy Virginia Beach's summertime weather while discovering the originality of local and national artists displaying, demonstrating and selling their original art and fine craft wares. 

A wide array of art forms comprise the festival including pottery, metal and glass work, photography, jewelry, drawings and paintings, and sculptures. All work is of original design with the artists on site. There are artisans who throw pots, turn wood, paint pictures, blow glass, forge metal, and photograph beautiful landscapes and wildlife, including beach and historic settings in Hampton Roads.

Stop by the Main Stage for live music including smooth jazz, oldies and easy listening. Children will enjoy the free activities on Saturday including music, interactive crafts, storytelling and face painting. The playground at Great Neck Park was recently renovated as well, allowing better access for kids of all ages and abilities.

A variety of food concessionaires will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage, pitas and more! Smoothies, lemonade, kettle corn, ice cream and even funnel cake will be available too.

Parking is available at Cox High School (corner of Great Neck Road & Shorehaven Drive), with free shuttle bus service to the nearby park.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 


All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on Monday, July 4 for Independence Day.


Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
