Fitness Class Options: Drop-In vs. Registered Classes
Our fitness instructors frequently hear that patrons weren't aware that we offered two different types of fitness classes. We offer both drop-in group fitness classes and registered classes. Some class formats are available as drop-in and registered classes.
What are "Drop-In" classes?
Drop-in classes are group fitness classes held in our recreation centers that do not require advanced registration. Each center has a monthly group fitness schedule that lists the class offerings. Classes are available on a first come, first served basis. Drop-in classes do require a recreation center membership card (or visitor pass) and a group fitness pass. You can purchase a punch card to pay for these classes (2-4 punches per class) or you can pay for each class individually. The 30 minute classes are $2 and one hour classes are $4. You can also purchase a 30-day or 90-day unlimited card, so you can attend as many classes as you would like.
Examples of these classes include, but are not limited to; Turbo-Kick®, SilverSneakers®, Zumba®, Hi-Low Cardio, Yoga, Pilates, Core Balance, Step and more.
What are "Registered" classes?
Registered classes are listed in our quarterly Programs & Activities catalog and do require advanced registration. Classes are available both in our recreation centers and at outdoor locations throughout the City. Classes held at recreation centers require a membership (or visitor pass), but outdoor classes do not. Class costs vary based on program and length. Registration can be done online through EZreg or in person at any recreation center.
These classes include, but are not limited to; boot camps, dance classes, Drums Alive®, kettlebells, personal training, martial arts, TRX® classes and more. |

2011 Bikeways & Trails Plan Complete
The citizens of Virginia Beach have shown and stated consistently over the years that they want to be able to bike and walk around the City, both for recreation and transportation.
Virginia Beach's 2009 Comprehensive Plan and its Master Transportation Plan respond to these desires generally, and the new 2011 Bikeways and Trails Plan responds to them specifically, pointing the way towards an enhanced system of bikeways and trails, plus the programs and other initiatives that support their use. City Council adopted this plan as a component of the Comprehensive Plan in April 2011. You can view the plan online. Printed copies will become available at libraries in June 2011 and will be available for purchase at the Planning Department for $25. |

Economical Option for Personal Training: Small Group
Are things tight financially for you this year? If you have put off your fitness goals due the hard economic times, there might be another option for you. We have been working hard to tailor our fitness programs to meet not only your fitness goals, but your financial goals as well.
We now have the option for Small Group Training. Instead of paying for a private session, you can register for group training and pay only a fraction of that cost. You can sign up with a couple friends, or just fill out an interest form requesting group training and we can match you up with a group. If you have a group looking to train on specific days and times, we can customize a schedule to accommodate your needs.
To learn more about Small Group Training, or to get signed up, contact the fitness staff at Great Neck Recreation Center at 496-6766. |

Meet the Trainer: Mike Chappelle
Mike received his B.S. in Exercise Science/Health Fitness Instruction from Norfolk State University in 2008 and has a personal training certification from the YMCA. He has a sports background where he flourished in football. Despite his size, he has been invited to and participated in several professional football tryouts for the NFL, CFL, and AFL. These experiences have helped him become a better person and trainer in knowing that all things are possible if a person is willing to put forth the effort and sacrifice.
Mike's fitness philosophy is full-body workouts working on all aspects of exercise. Through full-body workouts and core strengthening, he believes clients will reach their full potential.
