Keep your child's body and mind active! Conveniently located in nearby schools and recreation centers; enroll your child in one of our before or after school programs.

Register Online via EZreg | Must have client barcode and family pin. These are provided at time of in-person registration and can be received in person with photo ID at any of our six community recreation centers.

Bonus! Bundled Memberships

As an added convenience, Out-of-School Time participants in our school-year program will receive a Virginia Beach Community Recreation Center membership. This Out-of-School Time bundled membership grants access to any of the six centers between Sept 1, 2011 and Aug 31, 2012.

Bring Your Furry Friend to K-9 Karnival 

Saturday, May 14 from 10 am to 3 pm at Red Wing Park, 1398 General Booth Blvd


K9 KarnivalWe're celebrating a day dedicated solely to the dogs! K-9 Karnival is an opportunity to come paw-to-paw with canine demonstrations, competitions, displays and more! Free and open to the public, all dogs (with up-to-date inoculations) are encouraged to attend with their owners!  


Activities taking place at the K-9 Karnival include:


2011 Hyperflite® Skyhoundz® Local Championships | 12:30 pm (Registration begins at 10:30 am)

Unleash the champion in your dog during this ever-entertaining contest with amazing displays of canine grace, athleticism and agility. This disc-catching event is open to all owners and dogs, regardless of breed, size or experience, as pound puppies can compete with purebred canines. Register your dog to participate and receive a free competition disc to take home. 


New for 2011! Agility Course Competition | 11:30 am (Registration begins at 10 am)

With jumps, hoops, tunnels and more, kids age 5-12 can compete with their pups. All dogs must be on a leash and retractable leashes are not permitted. Presented in partnership with Family Dog Club Inc.


20th Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show | 10:30 am (Registration begins at 10 am)

It's 15 seconds of fame for you and your favorite mutt! Contest categories include Best Tail Wagging, Best Barking, Owner/Dog Look-Alike, and Stupid Pet Tricks. Register at the show arena on the day of the event. Participation is free and prizes will be awarded!


Rabies Shot Clinic | 10 am - 3 pm

A must for every dog! Offered on-site at the "Neuter Scooter," by the Virginia Beach SPCA. VBSPCA veterinarians will offer rabies shots for $10.


Microchip Clinic | 11 am - 12 pm

Free to the first 100 dogs! Sponsored by Beagles to the Rescue in partnership with Virginia Beach Veterinary Hospital.

You can also register your dog for year-round fun and exercise in the dog parks, located at Red Wing Park and Woodstock Park. Each dog park is approximately one acre and is fenced in to allow dogs to run and play free of their leashes. If you want to register your dog for admittance to the dog parks, please bring your City dog registration, rabies vaccination verification (or proof of), and $10.

Friday Free for All Series Kicks Off May 20! 


Every third Friday from May until September, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation will be hosting Friday Free for All, a collection of family-friendly movie nights and concerts in the park complete with themed games, activities, music and fun for everyone! Free admission and free parking at all events; food available for purchase.


Jazz PlayerJazz Concert | Friday, May 20, 6-9 pm | Great Neck Park

Eddie Sal, a local favorite and New Orleans native, will sing and entertain you with a taste of Dixieland and New Orleans funky grooves at this unique outdoor concert setting in Great Neck Park. Eddie Sal has entertained all over the U.S. from New Orleans to Las Vegas, Reno, Boston, Orlando and all points in between. With versatility that allows him to perform many styles of music, his soulful voice will delight any audience. Past performances include Showtime at the Apollo and the New Orleans Summer Pops Orchestra.

Overflow parking will be available at Cox High School (corner of Great Neck Road & Shorehaven Drive).


Movie Night: The Goonies | Friday, June 17, 7:30-10 pm | Mount Trashmore Park

Join us at Mount Trashmore Park for a showing of "The Goonies" (Rated PG, 111 minutes). Indulge in the adventure to find legendary 17th century pirate One-Eyed Willie's buried treasure in this 1985 classic film. Wear your best scallywag eye patch or swash bucklin' gear for plenty of pirate-themed activities. Movie begins at sunset.

Reel in the Big One at FREE Family Fishing Clinic! 

Saturday, June 4 from 8:30 am to 1 pm at Munden Point Park, 2001 Pefley Lane


Boy FishingHelp your child tackle the basics of angling Virginia's waters by attending this free family fishing clinic. You and your child (ages 5-14) will team up with experienced fishermen for guided instruction on beginning fishing skills.

Advance registration is required. Register under parent or guardian name at any Virginia Beach Recreation Center or online. Limited to the first 150 participants. A parent or guardian must be present for every 4 children.

Fishing poles, tackle and bait provided if needed. Event will be held rain or shine. Hot dog lunch included.

FREE Water Safety Lessons for Mary Helen Thomas Day

Sunday, June 12 at all Virginia Beach Recreation Centers 


The American Red Cross of Southeastern Virginia Water Safety Committee is honoring the memory of Mary Helen Thomas by offering a free learn to swim day for youth age 4-12 on Sunday, June 12. Nine pools in the Hampton Roads area will be participating. Swim lesson scholarships and other prizes will be raffled off at each site. To register, please call the location of your choice before June 8:

Mary Helen Thomas was a community leader who promoted water safety and learn-to-swim programs in the Hampton Roads area. She broke down racial barriers in the 1960's and was an inspiration and a hero.

All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on Monday, May 30 for Memorial Day.


The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed through Spring 2011 for renovations.


Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
