Celebrate Earth Day at Mount Trashmore Park

This family-friendly event invites you to celebrate your commitment to bettering the environment. Refresh your approach to making our world a healthier place with various exhibits, displays and activities that will give you a chance to discover and explore effective and convenient ways to green your lifestyle.


Some highlights for this year's event feature:


eCycling by Synergy & Document Shredding by CINTAS 9 am - 3 pm | Take this opportunity to safely dispose of confidential waste paper (up to 5 boxes), unwanted home electronics and computer equipment - FREE! Need to know what items will be accepted for electronic recycling? View a list here! 


Dumpster Dive Demonstration | Project Green Teens will sift through trash and debris in a park dumpster to find items that could have been recycled. 


Bicycling Activities | Travel green on your bike to the event and receive a free gift (first 100 only) at the free Bike Valet; also free Bike Safety Check.


Mayor's Bike Ride 1:30 pm | Mayor Will Sessoms invites you to bike around Lake Trashmore with him and Parks & Recreation Director Cindy Curtis.

Piranhas LogoThe Virginia Beach Piranhas Women's League and Men's Premier Development League soccer teams are providing a special buy one, get one free ticket offer for Virginia Beach Recreation Center members. This offer is good at any home game, including double-headers! Follow-Up Workshop for Williams Farm Skate Park Design

Thursday, May 5 from 6 - 8 pm at Diamond Springs Elementary, 5225 Learning Circle 


SkateboardingWe're hosting a follow-up workshop for the public to review the Williams Farm Skate Park design plans that have been developed based on the feedback garnered at the first meeting. The skate park is part of the Williams Farm Recreation Center & Park project in the western Bayside area of the City.
The skate park will be approximately 20,000 square feet, in-ground concrete with urban street plaza elements like steps and rails. Plans also include a vert ramp/bowl component and a flow park. If you skate or know others who may be interested, help us spread the word and attend this workshop!

Bring Your Furry Friend to K-9 Karnival

Saturday, May 14 from 10 am to 3 pm at Red Wing Park, 1398 General Booth Blvd 


K-9 KarnivalWe're celebrating a day dedicated solely to the dogs! K-9 Karnival is an opportunity to come paw-to-paw with canine demonstrations, competitions, displays and more! Free and open to the public, all dogs (with up-to-date inoculations) are encouraged to attend with their owners!  


Activities taking place at the K-9 Karnival include:


2011 Hyperflite® Skyhoundz® Local Championships | 1 - 3 pm (Registration begins at 10 am)

Unleash the champion in your dog during this ever-entertaining contest with amazing displays of canine grace, athleticism and agility. This disc-catching event is open to all owners and dogs, regardless of breed, size or experience, as pound puppies can compete with purebred canines. Register your dog to participate and receive a free competition disc to take home. 


New for 2011! Agility Course Competition | 11:30 am (Registration begins at 10 am)

With jumps, hoops, tunnels and more, kids age 5-12 can compete with their pups. All dogs must be on a leash and retractable leashes are not permitted. Presented in partnership with Family Dog Club Inc.


20th Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show | 10:30 am - 12 pm (Registration begins at 10 am)

It's 15 seconds of fame for you and your favorite mutt! Contest categories include Best Tail Wagging, Best Barking, Owner/Dog Look-Alike, and "Stupid Pet Tricks." Participation is free and prizes will be awarded!


Rabies Shot Clinic | 10 am - 3 pm

A must for every dog! Offered on-site at the "Neuter Scooter," by the Virginia Beach SPCA. VBSPCA veterinarians will offer rabies shots at a reduced rate of $10.

You can also register your dog for year-round fun and exercise in the dog parks, located at Red Wing Park and Woodstock Park. Each dog park is approximately one acre and is fenced in to allow dogs to run and play free of their leashes. If you want to register your dog for admittance to the dog parks, please bring your City dog registration, rabies vaccination verification (or proof of), and $10.

Friday Free For All Series Kicks Off with Jazz Concert  

Friday, May 20 from 6-9 pm at Great Neck Park, 2513 Shorehaven Drive


Jazz PlayerEvery third Friday from May until September, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation will be hosting Friday Free for All, a collection of family-friendly movie nights and concerts in the park complete with themed games, activities, music and fun for everyone!


Join us on Friday, May 20 at 6 pm for a Jazz Concert at Great Neck Park, the first event in the five part series. Eddie Sal, a local favorite and New Orleans native, will sing and entertain you with a taste of Dixieland and New Orleans funky grooves at this unique outdoor concert setting.  


Eddie Sal has entertained all over the U.S. from New Orleans to Las Vegas, Reno, Boston, Orlando and all points in between. With versatility that allows him to perform many styles of music, his soulful voice will delight any audience. Past performances include Showtime at the Apollo and the New Orleans Summer Pops Orchestra.


Free admission and free parking! Food will be available for purchase. Overflow parking will be available at Cox High School (corner of Great Neck Road & Shorehaven Drive).

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 


All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on Monday, May 30 for Memorial Day.


The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed through Spring 2011 for renovations.


Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
