CampersBefore we know it, school will be out and summer will be upon us. Ensure your child has a fun summer filled with exciting games and activities, special events, field trips, and more! We offer camps in schools across the city, as well as at most recreation centers. We also offer a variety of specialty summer camps and add-on swimming lessons. View complete offerings in the Spring Catalog

 
Register your child for camp online via EZreg or in person at any recreation center. All camps are now available for registration.

 

SCHOOL-BASED CAMPS

KidzQuest Summer Camps (rising 1st - 5th graders)  

$84 per child + $10 non-refundable deposit per week

 

Middle School Summer Camps (rising 6th - 9th graders) 

$89 per child + $10 non-refundable deposit per week 


RECREATION CENTER-BASED CAMPS

Preschool & Kindergarten Summer Camps (age 3 - 6) 

Half day: $45 per child + $30 non-refundable deposit per week
All day: $110 per child + $30 non-refundable deposit per week 

 

Youth Summer Camps (rising 1st - 6th graders)

$100 per child + $30 non-refundable deposit per week

 

Teen Summer Camps (rising 7th - 9th graders)

$110 per child + $30 non-refundable deposit per week

 

OTHER OPTIONS

Add-on Swimming Lessons (age 5 - 15)

Enhance your child's summer camp experience by including a week of swimming lessons - 45 minutes per day, for 5 days. All abilities of swimmers welcome! The swimmer must be enrolled in the rec center summer camp during the week of lessons. $30 per week

Beginning at Dark at Mount Trashmore Park

 

Star PartyTake your stargazing to Mount Trashmore Park TONIGHT for the 3rd Annual Mount Trashmore Star Party! Come and observe night sky wonders through a variety of telescopes or bring your own! Learn to identify constellations in the sky as they are pointed out by planetarium coordinator Chuck Dibbs and the Back Bay Amateur Astronomers.


Experience ViewSpace! A tent will be setup for this internet-fed, self-updating, permanent exhibit from the Space Telescope Science Institute, home of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.


April Sights: Waxing gibbous moon, the rings of Saturn and star clusters. Event dependent on clear skies.

Experience Native American Culture at Pow Wow 

Saturday, April 23 from 11 am to 6 pm at Mount Trashmore Park, 310 Edwin Drive

 

Pow WowCome out to Mount Trashmore Park on Saturday, April 23 for the 11th Annual American Indian Pow Wow: A Celebration of Life for all People. Experience Native American culture as it is showcased through spirited music, intertribal dancing and drumming, and American Indian cuisine at this interactive and educational event.
 
Learn about various dances and regalia worn while taking the opportunity to participate in intertribal dancing. (Due to the nature of the American Indian Pow Wow, no pets are allowed in the event area.) There will be displays and sales of authentic and Indian-inspired arts and crafts, and educational displays of American Indian artifacts. New this year is an exhibit of live, local animals with ties to the Native American culture. American Indian foods as well as other festival foods will be available for purchase.
 
The event opens to the public at 11 am for educational and craft displays/sales. The grand entry will take place at noon followed by American Indian drumming, dancing and activities, until the closing ceremony at 5:45 pm. This event is free with ample on-site parking.

Youth Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Project Conference

Saturday, April 30 from 8 am to 5:30 pm at Larkspur Middle School, 4696 Princess Anne Rd 

 

High School students from the Hampton Roads area are invited to attend the free regional Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project (YADAPP) conference on April 30. Teens will learn about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse through interactive and educational workshops at this full-day, free conference. Participants will work in teams to create an innovative action plan to prevent underage drinking and substance abuse in their schools and communities.

 

The conference is open to all Hampton Roads high school students, and requires a team of four with an adult sponsor. Teams should register by April 23

Dumpster Dive Demonstration

Project Green Teens will sift through trash and debris in a park dumpster to find items that could have been recycled.

Mayor's Bike Ride | 1:30 pm

Mayor Will Sessoms invites you to bike around Lake Trashmore with him and Parks & Recreation Director Cindy Curtis.

Kids Can Compete in Hershey's Track & Field Games  

Saturday, May 6 at 5 pm at First Colonial HS
 
 

Track & FieldYouth between the ages of 9 and 14 who love to run, jump and throw are invited to participate in the annual Hershey's Track & Field meet. Registration is free and participants must attend elementary or middle school in Virginia Beach. Forms should be submitted no later than April 27.

 

The meets will be held on Friday, May 6 at First Colonial High School. The top two finishers for each event per age group will advance to district meets.

 

Events include: 50 meter dash (ages 9 & 10), 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4x100 meter relay, softball throw & standing long jump.

Bring Your Furry Friend to K-9 Karnival 

Saturday, May 14 from 10 am to 3 pm at Red Wing Park, 1398 General Booth Blvd

 

K9 KarnivalWe're celebrating a day dedicated solely to the dogs! K-9 Karnival is an opportunity to come paw-to-paw with canine demonstrations, competitions, displays and more! Free and open to the public, all dogs (with up-to-date inoculations) are encouraged to attend with their owners!  

 

Activities taking place at the K-9 Karnival include:

 

2011 Hyperflite® Skyhoundz® Local Championships | 1 - 3 pm (Registration begins at 10 am)

Unleash the champion in your dog during this ever-entertaining contest with amazing displays of canine grace, athleticism and agility. This disc-catching event is open to all owners and dogs, regardless of breed, size or experience, as pound puppies can compete with purebred canines. (In fact, a number of shelter adoptees have gone on to win it all. Who knows - you may have a future champion on your hands!)  Register your dog to participate and receive a free competition disc to take home. 

 

New for 2011! Agility Course Competition | 11:30 am (Registration begins at 10 am)

With jumps, hoops, tunnels and more, kids age 5-12 can compete with their pups. All dogs must be on a leash and retractable leashes are not permitted. Presented in partnership with Family Dog Club Inc.

 

20th Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show | 10:30 am - 12 pm (Registration begins at 10 am)

It's 15 seconds of fame for you and your favorite mutt! Contest categories include Best Tail Wagging, Best Barking, Owner/Dog Look-Alike, and "Stupid Pet Tricks." Register at the show arena on the day of the event. Participation is free and prizes will be awarded!

 

Rabies Shot Clinic | 10 am - 3 pm

A must for every dog! Offered on-site at the "Neuter Scooter," by the Virginia Beach SPCA. VBSPCA veterinarians will offer rabies shots at a reduced rate of $10.


You can also register your dog for year-round fun and exercise in the dog parks, located at Red Wing Park and Woodstock Park. Each dog park is approximately one acre and is fenced in to allow dogs to run and play free of their leashes. If you want to register your dog for admittance to the dog parks, please bring your City dog registration, rabies vaccination verification (or proof of), and $10.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 

 

All Virginia Beach Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on Sunday, April 24 for Easter.

 

The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed through Spring 2011 for renovations.

 

Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
