ResolutionAs we wind down the first month of the new year, it's the perfect time to check in on the progress of your New Year's resolution. Maybe you resolved to lose weight, spend more time with your family, volunteer, or learn something new. If you did, guess what? According to Time.com, you have chosen among the top ten commonly broken New Year's resolutions!


Now is not the time to throw in the towel! Hold your head high, recommit to your goal and let us help you stay on track with your resolution. After all, you've still got eleven months of opportunity ahead!

Lose Weight and Get Fit

Did you know that an adult living in Virginia Beach can get a one year recreation center membership for just $72? In fact, through May 31, we'll even give you an extra month for free! Sometimes just being in the right environment can help you stay motivated. We also have fitness classes and personal training at our centers.


Spend More Time With Your Family

With 249 parks throughout the city, you can never be too far from a great recreational opportunity for your family! The benefits of outdoor recreation are endless - it reduces stress, increases self-esteem and confidence, increases aerobic and cardiovascular fitness, and leads to increased pride in your community. And best of all, a visit to a park costs nothing!



This past fiscal year, Parks & Recreation had over 9,200 volunteers donate 160,363 hours of time to conduct programs, assist with events, and clean parks, roadways and waterways! Make a difference in your community and volunteer with us!


Learn Something New

We offer a variety of classes and programs for beginners! Learn to swim, make some pottery, learn ballet or karate-do, or learn to play tennis! These are just a few of the beginner level classes that you can try. Check out our Winter Catalog for a complete listing of offerings.

Get in the Game! Register for Spring Sports Leagues 


Sand FootballAdult Spring Softball

Registration: Feb 21 - March 11 | $500/team
Play ball! Men's, women's and coed softball leagues are offered. New this year, we're also offering a men's 50 & over league. Practices begin April 1 and the season will run from the end of April through late July. Each team consists of a maximum of 20 players. Games are held at various ball fields throughout the city. 

Adult Spring Coed Sand Football

Registration: Feb 1-11 | $675/team
Love to play football? Like the beach? Give sand football a try this spring! Gather up your friends and put together a team of up to 15 players for this coed 6 on 6 flag football league. Games consist of two 40-minute halves and are played on the beach at 25th Street on Sunday mornings. The season runs from March to May.

A few notes about registration:

  • Registration is taken on a team basis at the City-Wide Athletic Office (4001 Dam Neck Road)
  • Each team pays a franchise fee at registration
  • Participants must be 18 years old or a graduating senior 
  • Register early! Leagues are subject to close-out prior to the last day of signups

Park WeddingGet Married in Our Parks

Weddings are welcome in designated parks throughout the city. We have three beautiful gardens at Red Wing Park and a gazebo overlooking the Lynnhaven Bay at Great Neck Park that are among our most popular wedding locations. Want to get married on the beach? Little Island Park is located right on the Atlantic Ocean with picnic shelters nearby for your reception. View rates and information for weddings


Reserve a Picnic Shelter 

If you're planning an outdoor event or gathering, consider hosting it in one of our beautiful city parks. Reserve a picnic shelter and enjoy the serenity and amenities of the park surrounded by your friends and family! 
Picnic shelters are available in the following parks: Bayville Farms, City View, Great Neck, Little Island, Mount Trashmore, Munden Point, Red Wing and Woodstock Park. Shelter sizes range from eight to twelve tables and all shelters have grills for charcoal cooking. View rates and reservation procedures for picnic shelters.

Host Your Child's Birthday Party

Leave the headaches of planning your child's next birthday party to us! You can enjoy the party and we'll handle the details. Virginia Beach Recreation Centers offer a variety of party options for children age 1 through 12. From pool parties to rock climbing parties, your child's experience is sure to be a memorable one! Rent a Room in a Recreation Center

Whether you need to host a meeting or a reception, we have a variety of spaces available to accommodate your guests. With six locations throughout the city, our recreation centers are a convenient choice for your group. Room options vary by center. What is Therapeutic Recreation?


Therapeutic RecreationTherapeutic Recreation, as a profession, uses treatment, education and recreation services to help people with illness, disabilities and other conditions to develop and use their leisure in ways that will enhance their health, independence and well being. Our own Therapeutic Recreation Program Unit's mission is to provide programs and services to individuals with disabilities that will...

  • Enrich quality of life
  • Meet community needs
  • Enhance skill development, leisure education and recreation participation
  • Increase independence through individualized goals and objectives

We offer a variety of programs for children, teens and adults including after school programs, summer day camps, dance classes, fitness programs, aquatic programs and social programs to meet these objectives.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 


Bow Creek Recreation Center will be closed February 28 through March 6 for maintenance.


Seatack Recreation Center will be closed March 14-20 for maintenance.


The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed through Spring 2011 for renovations.


Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers! If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
