Celebrate "Lights On Afterschool" Today!

Today we're celebrating the 11th Annual Lights on Afterschool! This national celebration is sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance to call attention to the importance of accessible, affordable and quality afterschool programs.

Virginia Beach has been supporting this project since its inception. This year's celebration will be at Bayside Elementary School from 3:30 - 5:30 pm today, Thursday, October 21. During this open house, we will spotlight our new programming methods, reveal up and coming trends and activities, and recognize the staff and children who serve and benefit from programs like ours. Arts and crafts, demonstrations, contests, competitions, inflatable slides and free hot dogs, popcorn and snow cones will be available. Teachers, administrators, parents, children and the community are encouraged to attend.

Those who are unable to attend the open house at Bayside Elementary School are encouraged to show support for Lights on Afterschool by turning on their porch lights for the day.

Join the western Bayside community in celebration of the development of the Williams Farm Recreation Center and Park. The event will begin with a ground breaking ceremony at 2 pm, followed by a free community celebration with inflatables, storytelling, music, children's activities, fitness and dance demonstrations, and more!

Williams Farm Park opened in 2008 and features a large central space for general play and events. Phase II of the park improvements will begin later this fall, and include a 25,000 square foot in-ground concrete skate park, restrooms and concession area, picnic shelters, and walkways to connect with nearby schools and neighborhoods.

The final design and construction of the Williams Farm Recreation Center will also begin later this fall. When the recreation center opens in 2012, the 71,000 square foot facility will feature a gym, large indoor pool, fitness spaces, indoor track, meeting rooms, and an outdoor playground, sprayground (or water play area), and basketball court. The Williams Farm Recreation Center is expected to be a silver LEED certified building, which integrates water quality, sustainable building practices, and operating practices for energy efficiencies.
