Mind and body formats, such as yoga, pilates, Tai Chi, and pilates-yoga fused classes help reduce stress which may aid in weight loss. In response to stress, levels of the hormone cortisol rise; for people who continue to worry, those levels can stay high. Elevated cortisol levels not only stimulate eating, they ensure that any additional calories are efficiently converted to fat. Worse yet, under the influence of cortisol, fat tends to get deposited in the abdomen, a particularly unhealthy place. Big bellies are linked to insulin resistance, a precursor to Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes and heart disease. By combating stress, mind-body formats can help normalize cortisol levels.
Beginning October 7, PiYo® has been added to the group fitness schedule at Great Neck from 6-7 pm. PiYo® is a unique athletic blend of strength training and core conditioning with a foundation based in pilates and yoga. This class is also offered Monday evenings at Bayside from 6:30-7:30. |

Meet the Instructor: David Jones
David A. Jones Jr. aka DJ Turbo has been working in the fitness industry for almost three years now. At age 13, David started gaining a lot of weight that followed him into his senior year of high school. He was able to change his negative eating habits and find a workout program that would soon spark his lifelong journey in fitness. He teaches Cardio Kick Boxing, TurboKick®, Hip Hop Dance, Yoga, PiYo® and Pilates. David's goal is to show everyone that no one truly hates fitness. He says, "You just have to find a program that's fun and that you love doing."
David is currently a full-time college student at Tidewater Community College and plans on getting his bachelor's degree in exercise science. Two of his biggest passions in life are music and dance.
"We spend our lives looking for our soul mate, everyone has what I call our soul mates to fitness... that one workout that you love waking up in morning and doing." --Chalene Johnson
