Around the World in 39 Days!
Camp Explore and New Ventures Wrap Up

Grommet IslandWOW! It's hard to believe that another summer has come and gone. Staff and campers had a blast throughout the summer participating in all the non-stop activities. At Camp Explore, the kids enjoyed swimming at Bow Creek Recreation Center, seeing the animals at the Virginia Living Museum, playing at Grommet Island Park and spending the day at Little Island Beach. Family and friends got to enjoy the Camp Carnival with their camper, as well as the many talents displayed on the last day at the annual Talent Show.

Botanical GardensThe participants and staff at New Ventures kept just as busy. The group volunteered at Botanical Gardens in Norfolk twice a week for a total of 156 hours! Participants benefitted from guest speakers discussing the job skills required for various careers. New Ventures also participated in some leisure activities of their choice. They went kayaking and fishing at Lake Smith and learned archery from the Outdoors Team. They enjoyed a tour of Red Wing Golf Course and seeing all of the birds that live along the course. Not only did New Ventures go to Busch Gardens this summer, but they also went to Ocean Breeze with the Therapeutic Recreation Programs from Norfolk. This gave the group a chance to meet new friends while enjoying water rides during the hot summer.

We can't wait to see what 2011 will bring for our summer camps! Thank you to EVERYONE who helped make this summer extra special!

A Sad Farewell to Janet Dell

Janet DellAfter 14 1/2 years with Therapeutic Recreation Programs, Janet Dell has moved on to spend more time with her family. Janet began her career with TR in May 1996 as a part-time staff member. She became a full time staff member in August 1996.

Over the years, Janet has had the opportunity to supervise just about every program offered from Wheelchair Sports to After School programs. While looking forward to lots of free time, Janet says "I will miss seeing all of the participants I have known for so many years and have watched grow up."

We will miss you Janet!
OutdoorBe On the Lookout: New Outdoor Challenge Series!

Kayak InstructionKayaking, fishing and hiking are the main attractions in this new Fall program for teens and young adults. Participants in the Outdoor Challenge Series will experience a variety of recreational and stewardship activities in the great outdoors. Each week, participants will learn the key elements of an outdoor activity on Thursday evening in a classroom setting. On the following Saturday, we'll take it outdoors and experience the activity first hand.

Through the challenges of each activity, participants can increase self-esteem and confidence, gain social skills, and learn coping strategies for various facets of life.

See registration article for dates, times and registration information.
