Kempsville Pool before renovations
Kempsville Pool Before Renovations
The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will undergo renovations beginning September 7, 2010. While there is no definite time frame to modernize Kempsville Recreation Center, maintenance will be completed to extend the life of the pool facility, including:
  • Installation of new HVAC system;
  • Installation of energy efficient windows;
  • Replacement of holding tank;
  • Replacement of the fiberglass pool shell with a plaster shell; and
  • Replacement of the railings on the pool deck and in the balcony area.
Renovations are expected to continue through May 2011. During this time, the swimming pool will be closed, but all other areas of Kempsville Recreation Center will remain open for use. Additional swimming classes will be offered at Bayside and Bow Creek Recreation Centers. Kempsville's swim team will practice at Bayside Recreation Center. And while Kempsville's pool is undergoing renovations, Bow Creek Recreation Center's pool will open at 6:30 am, Monday through Friday, to accommodate early morning swimmers.

Details about the progress of the renovations, including photos, will be posted to VBgov.com/Swim.
Update on Municipal Golf Course Operations

Aerial view of Red Wing Lake Golf Course
Red Wing Lake
This past year, the Golf Division has undergone an extensive review of all facets of the City's golf course operations. This review was conducted by Golf Convergence with the complete report found here.

Based upon current market conditions and future requirements, it was recommended to look into the private sector to provide the management and maintenance of our golf courses. Currently, we are in the process of requesting proposals from golf management companies to partner with the City to provide these services for Red Wing Lake, Kempsville Greens and Bow Creek Golf Courses beginning January 1, 2011 with the option to provide the same at Virginia Beach National Golf Course beginning January 1, 2012.

It is our goal to create a win/win partnership that will provide our guests with an exceptional golfing experience for many years to come. We will keep you updated as the process continues.

Thank You to the USS Bush Sailors!

Bush participated in 80 community service projects across Hampton Roads on August 17. The City of Virginia Beach was lucky to receive 502 volunteers at 39 sites, including many of our parks. Thank you to all who participated!
