Dance Like Nobody's Watching
DancingDancing is one of the best full body, no-equipment-needed, sweat-dripping, calorie-blasting, natural exercises (not to mention the fun factor).
Why choose dance over traditional exercise?
  • Dance keeps your mind challenged by mixing the steps and rhythms. It never feels boring.
  • Moving to music puts a smile on everybody's face. It improves serotonin levels in your brain.
  • Dance improves your self-esteem.
  • Dance gives you better body awareness.
  • Dance exercise is based on interval training (mixing high intensity bursts of exercise with moderate intensity recovery periods.)

Got 10 Minutes? Get a Total Body Workout
Jump RopeThis total body, fat burning circuit will work your upper body, lower body, abs and heart rate. All you need is a jump rope and you can do this workout anywhere.
  • Jump Rope x 100
  • Jumping Lunges x 10 each leg
  • Push Ups x 10
Perform as many rounds as you can in 10 minutes. See if you can get 2-3 rounds and slowly build to 4-5 rounds.

Did You Make a Good Breakfast Choice? 
DonutsMany people start their day with the wrong breakfast. They consume large amounts of sugar, fat and salt, then feel sluggish, unmotivated and fat, so they grab some more fat, sugar and salt to feel better. Break the cycle and start your day with amazing energy, metabolism and focus. Ask yourself these questions to see if you ate the best breakfast for you:
  • Why did you choose it?
  • How did you feel after eating?
  • What was the quality of the food?
  • Did it have excessive sugar, fat, salt and preservatives/chemicals?
  • Could you have made a better decision? If yes, what?
  • Why didn't you make a better decision?
Do you want to lose weight, have more energy and have less pain? Breakfast is a chance to achieve all three of those things! Tomorrow morning make a conscious choice to eat a lean protein like eggs, energizing carbs like oatmeal & berries, and a good source of fat like almond butter.
Meet the Trainer: Kim Mitchell
Kim Mitchell
Kim Mitchell is a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of American (AFAA) and has been training clients since February 2008.
Her mission as a personal trainer is to educate her clients about strength training, cardiovascular training, nutrition, and overall healthy living. She challenges them to approach every workout and every meal with intensity and purpose. She trains the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.
In addition to personal training, Kim is also an NPC (National Physique Committee) figure champion. On November 8, 2008, she finished 1st in the Short Class and was the Overall Figure Champion at the NPC Virginia/DC State Championships.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 

Great Neck Recreation Center will be closed August 30 through September 5 for maintenance. The weight room will remain closed through September 12 and the pool may remain closed through September 19. Please call 496-6766 for opening date.
All Community Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed on September 6 for Labor Day. (Not Independence Day as stated in the July newsletter. Oops!)
The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed beginning September 7 for renovations. Reopening is expected in May 2011. 
Princess Anne Recreation Center will be closed September 13-19 for maintenance. The pool will remain closed through September 26 and may remain closed longer, so please call 426-0022 for opening date.
Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers!  If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center. Use this locator to help you find one!
