Marshview Tract to Become City Park

MarshviewThe transfer of the 98-acre Marshview property, first discussed between City and Navy officials over 19 years ago, finally became a reality on May 18.
The undeveloped, forested property lies between Birdneck Road and the Shadowlawn and Salt Marsh Point neighborhoods, bordering Owls Creek and Lake Rudee. It will become a public park, with most of the tract remaining in its natural state. View a map of the area.
Virginia Beach acquired Marshview through a swap with the Navy. In exchange for Marshview, the city has conveyed a restrictive easement to the Navy on 46.71 acres between Oceana and Fentress. The Navy will still own a restrictive easement over the Marshview property, but the city's park development plans fall within those restrictions.
A 2002 city study recommended that the tract be developed mainly as a passive recreation area, with multi-use trails, community gardens, wooded buffers for surrounding neighborhoods and active recreation areas at the perimeter.
Parks and Recreation staff are already working on the first phase of park improvements, a new 10' wide multi-use asphalt trail that will begin at the park entrance on the west side of the park on Marshview Drive and wind through the northern portion of the property, bridging marshland to connect with Virginia Avenue on the east side of the park. Master planning for the site, with community input, will start in the fall.
