Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation is gearing up for a busy summer! Check out our new Youth Programs Catalog before it even hits the streets!  Registration for new programs begins Saturday, June 5.
Family Fun Fridays Begin in June
Mount Trashmore Park | Activities at 7:30 pm | Movie at Sunset
 
Family FunEvery 3rd Friday from June until September, we will be hosting Family Fun Fridays at Mount Trashmore Park, complete with themed games, activities, music and fun for everyone, including a featured movie to enjoy under the stars! Enjoy free admission and onsite parking with movie snacks available for purchase
 
 
Friday, 6.18 | Magic & Mystery
Kick off the summer with a dose of fantasy and imagination with entertaining activities and the book-based film, The Spiderwick Chronicles, where you can witness a world of faeries, goblins and other magical creatures!

Friday, 7.16 | Weather Watchers
The second Family Fun Friday night outdoors in the park under the summer sky includes star gazing and weather-watching education and activities as we feature Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Friday, 8.20 | Deep Sea Wonders
Get fishy with our aqua-related activities and games, then stay tuned for the underwater adventures in the featured flick Shark Tale.

Friday, 9.17 | Football Night
Enjoy the family football exhibits, demonstrations and activities by the VBP&R Fitness staff and bring your beach blanket or chair to relax on the hillside to watch the final outdoor movie of the 2010 Family Fun Series, Little Giants.
Hershey's Track & Field Results Are In!
 
Thank you to all of the participants and attendees at this year's Hershey's Track & Field Games! We had over 400 boys and girls participate in the events at First Colonial High School on April 30. Did your child compete? View the meet results here.

Domonique Moore Awarded Youth Volunteer of the Year 
The Debra L. Elam Award Presented to 16 Year Old Salem High School Junior

On Tuesday, May 4th, Domonique Moore was awarded the City of Virginia Beach's most prestigious volunteer recognition. The Debra L. Elam Award was presented to Domonique during the City's annual volunteer recognition ceremony held in the Volunteer Garden at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center.
 
In 2009, Ms. Moore volunteered 339 hours working as a Clerical Assistant and Junior Activity Center Assistant Leader with the Out-of-School Time Programs Unit, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation. For the past 5 years, Domonique has donated a total of 1,916 hours working with the Department's Before and After School programs.
 
Domonique's supervisor, Felicia Hoyle, nominated her for the award stating that Domonique exhibits strong leadership qualities necessary to accomplish the job of Junior Activity Center Leader. Continue reading...
Bring the Dog (and Kids) to K-9 Karnival
Saturday, May 15 | 1-6 pm at Red Wing Park | Movie at Sunset
 
K9 KarnivalWe're celebrating a day dedicated solely to the dogs! Bring your furry friend and check out doggie-related businesses, canine rescue organizations, and inspiring canine demonstrations at the K-9 Karnival. Got a pooch with talent? All dogs can compete in the 2010 Skyhoundz® Competition, canine disc contest, and the 19th Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show. Finish out the day with the outdoor showing of the hit movie, Hotel for Dogs, which begins at sunset. The whole family will enjoy a day at the park celebrating man's best friend!
 
You can also register your dog for year-round fun and exercise in the dog parks, located at Red Wing Park and Woodstock Park. If you want to register your dog for admittance to the dog parks, please bring your City dog registration, rabies vaccination verification (or proof of), and $10.

Go Fish! Reel in the Big One at the Family Fishing Clinic
Saturday, June 5 from 8:30 am - 1 pm at Munden Point Park, 2001 Pefley Lane
 
Fishing Clinic
Help your child tackle the basics of angling Virginia waters by coming to our Family Fishing Clinic. You and your child will team up with experienced fishermen for guided instruction on beginning fishing skills. Fishing related games and activities will also be held through the morning. Open to the public, this event is limited to the first 150 youth ages 5-14 to register (advance registration is required). A parent or guardian must be present for every four children. Fishing poles, tackle, and bait will be provided if needed. Hot dog lunch included. The event will be held rain or shine; check-in is 8:45 am - 9:30 am.
 
Cost of the event is only $5, but advanced registration is required for the Family Fishing Clinic. Register at any Virginia Beach Community Recreation Center or at EZReg.VBgov.com (course #94151).
Summer Sports Camps Offer Skills Development and FUN! 
 
Soccer Camp
Do you have a child who loves being active and playing sports? Our sports camps will help kids develop their skills while having fun and making friends!
 
British Soccer Camp
Grades 1 - 8 · Receive high-level soccer coaching from a team
of international experts right at Great Neck Park. Each day
includes individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices,
small-sided games, coached scrimmages, and a daily tournament. Equally important, the coaches provide your child with lessons in self-discipline, good sportsmanship and respect for others and for the game. Campers will also enjoy an end of camp graduation party! Each camper will receive a free British soccer ball, camp shirt, jersey, and a personal skills evaluation. Register by June 25 at

Boxing Camp
Age 6 - 12 · Learn the fundamentals of boxing taught by certified United States Boxing coaches. Participate in a variety of drills to improve hand-eye coordination, foot work, hand speed, focus, concentration and core strength. Register at any recreation center.

Sports Conditioning Camp
Age 8 - 16 · Power, speed, agility, endurance and skill are the primary components of a star athlete. Athletes and future athletes will develop and hone sports specific training methods to increase power, speed, agility and endurance to aid them in becoming future stars. Camp will be conducted by fitness professionals using state of the art training practices. Register at any recreation center.

Indoor Tennis Camp
Age 5 - 17 · Beat the heat!! The majority of this camp will be taught inside our climate controlled bubble. Students will enjoy a great week of tennis learning fundamentals for all strokes. This is a great introduction to the game of tennis. Note: Some camp drills will be conducted outside to make use of additional courts. View dates, times, cost and register here.
 
Outdoor Tennis Camp
Age 5 - 17 · Enjoy an entire week of tennis and fun. Beginning tennis players will learn the basics of tennis in a fun, exciting atmosphere. More experienced participants will be exposed to more advance drills and playing situations. All participants will receive a free gift at end of summer party. All Community Recreation Centers and Owl Creek Tennis Center will be closed May 31 for Memorial Day.
 
Don't forget that your membership is good at all six recreation centers!  If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center.  Use this locator to help you find one!
