We offer camps in our recreation centers and in select schools across the City. We also offer specialty summer camps, such as Boxing, Kayaking, Skateboarding, Tennis and more, and add-on swimming lessons. View complete offerings in the Youth Catalog.

|Celebrate Earth Day with a Dumpster Dive Demonstration
Thursday, April 22 from 4-7 pm at Lynnhaven Middle School
Help your kids understand the importance of recycling with this unique opportunity to observe a dumpster dive on Earth Day. Project Green Teens and Lynnhaven Middle School's environmental club will don protective equipment and retrieve all items out of the dumpsters. Yes, ALL items! Bag by bag, students will sort and weigh items to determine the success of Lynnhaven Middle School's recycling efforts.
Swing by and help us celebrate Earth Day. You'll be showing support for the teens, and you can also learn how to maximize your own recycling efforts.

|See the Stars at the Mount Trashmore Star Party
Friday, April 23 beginning at Dark at Mount Trashmore Park
Take your stargazing to Mount Trashmore Park! The Virginia Beach City Public Schools Planetarium along with local astronomy clubs are collaborating with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation to host the 2nd Mount Trashmore Star Party. Come and observe night sky wonders through a variety of telescopes. Learn to identify constellations in the sky as they are pointed out by planetarium coordinator Chuck Dibbs and others.
Anyone wishing to set up a telescope can also do so. The goal is to share the beauty of the night sky with anyone wishing to learn about it. For more information, please contact Stacy Sanders at 385-0425, or Chuck Dibbs at 648-4940.
|Final Call for Track & Field Participants
Friday, April 30 from 5-9 pm at First Colonial H.S. | Register by Friday, April 23
Do you have a child that loves to run, jump or throw? Sign them up for Hershey's Track and Field Games! Boys and girls ages 9-14 who attend elementary or middle school in Virginia Beach are invited to participate in this annual meet. Registration is free and an online form is available for download.
The meets will be held at First Colonial High School, 1272 Mill Dam Road. Registration deadline is April 23, 2010.
Events include: 50 meter dash (ages 9&10), 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4x100 meter relay, softball throw and standing long jump. The top two finishers for each event per age group will advance to district meets.
|Join Us for Earth Day and American Indian Pow Wow
Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 2 at Mount Trashmore Park
For the first time ever, Earth Day and the American Indian Pow Wow will be held on the same weekend at Mount Trashmore Park in the hope that these two events will complement one another, allowing added opportunities to honor Mother Earth. You'll find plenty of activities for the kids along with learning opportunities for all ages.
The 10th Annual American Indian Pow Wow
takes places on Saturday, May 1, 11:00 am - 6:00 pm. Become enriched in Native American culture as it is showcased through spirited music, intertribal dancing and drumming, and American Indian cuisine at this interactive and alluring event. There will be displays and sales of authentic and Indian-inspired arts and crafts, and educational displays exhibiting artifacts used by American Indians. Add this event on Facebook
Mark your calendar for the 2010 Earth Day Celebration
on Sunday, May 2, 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. This event will give you a chance to take part in the national Earth Day's efforts to work towards a "Billion Acts of Green" - a collection of environmental actions, deeds and undertakings that count towards endeavors to solve climate change. This event will also feature an eCycling opportunity from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm sponsored by Synergy Recycling.
|Bring Your Furry Friend Out to the K-9 Karnival
Saturday, May 15 from 1-6 pm at Red Wing Park | Movie Begins at Sunset
We're celebrating a day dedicated solely to the dogs! Bring your furry friend and check out doggie-related businesses, canine rescue organizations, and inspiring canine demonstrations at the K-9 Karnival. Got a pooch with talent? All dogs can compete in the 2010 Skyhoundz® Competition, canine disc contest, and the 19th Annual Dog-Gonest Dog Show. Finish out the day with the outdoor showing of the hit movie, Hotel for Dogs, which begins at sunset. The whole family will enjoy a day at the park celebrating man's best friend!
You can also register your dog for year-round fun and exercise in the dog parks, located at Red Wing Park and Woodstock Park. Each dog park is approximately one acre and is fenced in to allow dogs to run and play free of their leashes. If you want to register your dog for admittance to the dog parks, please bring your City dog registration, rabies vaccination verification (or proof of), and $10.
