Join Us for the Cherry Blossom Festival
Saturday, March 27 from 11am-2:30pm at Red Wing Park
 
japanese gardenCelebrate Virginia Beach's international sisterhood with Miyazaki City, Japan, at the 6th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival. You and your family will enjoy the rich culture and beauty of Japanese music, martial arts, cultural activities and demonstrations such as the paper art of Origami, Oriental Pottery, Gyotaku and more. View the event program. 
 
Admission is free. Food and beverage will be available for purchase. You are welcome to bring a blanket or lawn chair for the performances. In the event of inclement weather conditions, the event will be postponed until Sunday, March 28, at the same time and place.

Summer Camp Registration is Just Around the Corner
 
Ensure your child has a fun summer filled with exciting games and activities, special events, field trips, and more!  We offer KidzQuest Summer Camps that take place in schools across the City, as well as Recreation Center Based Summer Camps at most recreation centers. We also offer specialty summer camps and add-on swimming lessons.  View complete offerings in the Youth Catalog.

Is Your Child Ready for Safe Bicycle Driving?
Saturday, April 10 at Kempsville Recreation Center
 
Bike Driving
Parents, as the temperatures warm up, help your child get geared up and educated for safe bicycling on the road. This clinic, taught by nationally certified trainers, is designed for new riders and their parents. The trainers will help you and your child be properly prepared for safe riding. The clinic covers helmets, bike fit, road rules, and safety education.
 
Bring your own bike. Fee covers all needed course material.

You'll Be Seeing Stars at the Mount Trashmore Star Party
Friday, April 23 beginning at Dark at Mount Trashmore Park
 
Take your stargazing to Mount Trashmore Park! The Virginia Beach City Public Schools Planetarium along with local astronomy clubs are collaborating with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation to host the 2nd Mount Trashmore Star Party. Come and observe night sky wonders through a variety of telescopes. Learn to identify constellations in the sky as they are pointed out by planetarium coordinator Chuck Dibbs and others.
 
A tent to experience "ViewSpace" will also be set up. "ViewSpace" is an internet-fed, self-updating, permanent exhibit from the Space Telescope Science Institute, home of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Learn more about "ViewSpace" at http://hubblesource.stsci.edu/exhibits/self-update/viewspace.
 
Anyone wishing to set up a telescope can also do so. The goal is to share the beauty of the night sky with anyone wishing to learn about it.  For more information, please contact Stacy Sanders at 385-0425, or Chuck Dibbs at 648-4940.
Youth Can Compete in Hershey's Track & Field Games
Friday, April 30 from 5-9pm at First Colonial H.S.
 
Track Meet
Do you have a child that loves to run, jump or throw?  Sign them up for Hershey's Track and Field Games! Boys and girls ages 9-14 who attend elementary or middle school in Virginia Beach are invited to participate in this annual meet. Registration is free and an online form is available for download.
 
The meets will be held at First Colonial High School, 1272 Mill Dam Road.  Registration deadline is April 23, 2010.
 
Events include: 50 meter dash (ages 9&10), 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, 4x100 meter relay, softball throw and standing long jump. The top two finishers for each event per age group will advance to district meets.

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures
 
The pool at Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed March 29 through April 4 for the installation of a new filtration system. 
 
Don't forget that your membership is good at all six recreation centers!  If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center.  Use this locator to help you find one!
