Prep for Cooler Temps on the Course
Zipping JacketThis time of year in Virginia Beach can mean unpredictable weather conditions. The temperature seems to change in an instant and you have to factor in the wind chill prior to dressing for golf.  Depending on the wind direction, it could be short sleeve or wind jacket weather. Remember that it's always better to use layers than to wear one bulky item. You can add or take away an article of clothing as the day progresses. A good wicking garment next to your skin is a good way to start.
In addition to dressing in layers, you want to be sure to use a sunscreen. Many people don't realize that the sun is actually closer to you during the winter than it is in the summer. Most sunscreens also protect your skin from the wind and help you retain moisture.
Pay for 18, Play All Day!
Pay for 18, Play All Day, space available, continues at Bow Creek, Kempsville Greens and Red Wing Lake!  Take advantage of this great opportunity at our courses.  If you get out early, you can get an extra nine or even eighteen holes in before the sun sets. If you only want to play a few extra holes, that's fine too. Hang on to your receipt for 18 holes and enjoy some more golf on us!
Note: Upon completion of the first 18 holes, first round golfers will be given priority at tee off.
Fun Fact: It's 'Snow' Joke
When a few South Carolina golf resorts took out rain insurance policies for their guests, many golfers thought it was funny when the word snow was added to their policy.  But it was no joke when Myrtle Beach was hit with two inches of snow in January 1992.  Forty-eight golfers at the Sands Oceanfront collected $7,100 from the resort for lost playing time.
Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation believes all of our diverse citizens have a right to participate in community recreation and we are committed to creating equal access for everyone who may have a challenge or barrier. Pro Tip: Pitch Perfect

by Sue Vreeland, LPGA instructor at Red Wing Lake Golf Course

A pitch shot is just part of a full swing. The distance the ball travels depends on the length of the backswing and the club that you choose. Dial in a distance by learning your distances from three different swing positions.
Take a swing where your target side arm gets to the pocket of your pants on the back swing. The forward swing consists of a pivot and just letting the club drop by gravity.  It should mirror the backswing in length, as inertia will let the club run out of gas naturally.
Once you get the hang of it, try a backswing that goes chest high, then try shoulder high.
Each backswing position will create a different distance. Try your backswing positions with a pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, and lob wedge.
Now you have lots of distances you can dial in. Tape your distances to the shafts of your clubs for a quick reference.
