Your Fitness Foundation: Good Shoes
ShoesYour footwear is more important than almost anything when it comes to proper workout gear. Some activities like soccer, basketball, tennis and running have specific shoes in which you should invest for your safety and longevity. Do not skimp on shoes.
The good news is, for around $100 you can get a very high quality pair that, with proper care, can be adequate for 3-6 months. If you are new to fitness, have previous foot/ankle injuries or suddenly experiencing foot pain for the first time, visiting a large shoe specialty store for a fitting may be in your best interest. All shoes are not created equal and getting this piece of equipment right is critical to your success.

Exercise Tips for Thanksgiving and Beyond

It's hard enough to exercise when little is going on, but add holidays to the mix and you may find exercise moving to the bottom of a lengthy to-do list. Staying active in some way will give you energy, help lessen holiday tension and of course, help mitigate some of the extra calories you may be eating.

  • Couple JoggingIt's beautiful outside during the holidays, so go for a walk around your neighborhood.
  • Park as far away from the entrance of the mall as possible, so you are forced to walk further when you head out to do your shopping.
  • If you miss a few visits to the gym, do not give up until New Years! Get in there and exercise now - even if it is just once. Some exercise is always better than none at all.
  • When you are really short on motivation or time, try to get at least ten minutes of exercise. Chances are, once you get started you will end up doing even more.
  • Get in a good solid exercise session right before a big meal. It will increase your will power and your metabolism. Also consider taking a nice walk following the meal. 
  • Clean the house! You need to get ready for the annual family visit anyway. Vigorous house cleaning burns about 150 calories every thirty minutes.
  • Find a workout buddy. Pick a good friend or family member and make a commitment to exercise regularly.
Fitness Team Member Highlight: Tony Lighthart 
Tony LighthartTony Lighthart has been with the City of Virginia Beach for 18 years and is currently programming and overseeing fitness classes out of Great Neck Recreation Center. He enjoys teaching land and water fitness classes, including Fit for Life and AquaFit. Tony has an extensive background in outdoor sports such as skateboarding, biking and surfing, which the Fitness Unit has been incorporating into classes for the public. He loves having a job that allows him the freedom to develop new and exciting fitness opportunities for the citizens of Virginia Beach.
Save the Date for Passport to Fitness: January 16, 2010
Passport to FitnessNot sure about which land or water fitness class to take? Participate in sample classes during our Passport to Fitness event on January 16, 2010. All six recreation centers will offer a variety of mini-classes from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm so you can try them out and see which classes you like the best. The Fitness Team will also be on hand to answer your questions.

Be sure to pick up a passport when you arrive at the center. This will list all the classes, times, and room assignments at that site. Have your passport stamped by the instructor of the classes you sample. Once you collect 5 stamps, turn in your passport to enter a drawing to win a 30-day unlimited group fitness pass. This event is free and available to participants age 14 years and older. Start planning for a fit new year!

Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures 

All Virginia Beach Community Recreation Centers, Owl Creek Tennis Center, City parks and park facilities will be closed on November 26-27 for Thanksgiving.
Bow Creek Recreation Center will be closed November 30 through December 6 for maintenance. The pool will remain closed through December 13. Additionally, the fitness room, game room (closing 11/28) and rooms 1, 2 & 3 will remain closed through December 18 due to ceiling replacement.  Please call the center to confirm opening dates.
The Mount Trashmore Skate Park will be closed December 7-14 for maintenance. The Skate Park at Woodstock Park will be open.
Don't forget that your membership is good at all six Virginia Beach Recreation Centers!  If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center.  Use this locator to help you find one!
