Save on Rec Center Memberships!Have you discovered the benefits of a Virginia Beach Recreation Center membership?  We have six community centers, each complete with an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, weight/fitness room, youth game room, and more!  Your membership provides access to all six centers with no joining fees and no monthly fees!   
 
Now through November 30, Virginia Beach adults and seniors can save 10% on an annual membership.  Adults pay only $59 for a 12-month membership and seniors pay just $47 for a 12-month membership.  Find out how to join!

New Lynnhaven River Launch Site at Birdneck
 
Birdneck LaunchVirginia Beach Parks and Recreation has been working with the Lynnhaven River NOW Stewardship and Access Committee to develop more access sites in the Lynnhaven River watershed.  Through these efforts, we're happy to announce the opening of the Birdneck Launch, which provides the public with non-motorized boat access to the Lynnhaven River.
 
A grand opening paddle will be held on Saturday, November 7, 9:00 am to noon. Meet at the Birdneck Launch and bring your own canoe or kayak.  Kayaks will also be available for rent through Wild River Outfitters.
 
To reach the new launch site, turn west on Old Virginia Beach Road from Birdneck Road (501 City Grill is on the corner) and follow it to the end.
Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Public Meeting 
Wednesday, November 4 at Hermitage Elementary School, 1701 Pleasure House Rd. 
 
Join us for a Public Information Meeting/Design Workshop for the Lake Lawson/Lake Smith Natural Resource Area (formerly the City of Norfolk Lake Smith Fishing Station) to learn about and provide input on the development of a Master Plan for this area.  The Master Plan will provide a framework for planning, recreational programming, development and management of the property, which was recently acquired through the City of Virginia Beach Open Space Acquisition Program.
 
The meeting will be held at Hermitage Elementary School on November 4, 2009 from 4:30 to 7:30 pm.  If you are unable to attend or need more information, please contact Rob MacPherson at 385-1100.
 

Shop Away at Santa's Stocking Old-Fashioned Craft Bazaar

Saturday and Sunday, November 7 & 8, Kempsville Recreation Center 
 

Santa's StockingPut on those comfy shoes and shop among 120 vendors selling budget-friendly holiday gifts, including knitted crafts, soaps and lotions, jewelry, decorative household items, and more. This event also takes place on Saturday and Sunday, November 21 & 22 with all new vendors!  Plan to attend one or both weekends for great deals and bring your children for those classic holiday photos with Santa! Admission is free and on-site parking is available.  Saturday hours are 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday hours are 11 am to 5 pm. 
 
Kempsville Recreation Center is located at 800 Monmouth Lane (off Kempsville Road) in Virginia Beach.  Map it!

Attend the Reba S. McClanan Fragrance Garden Dedication 
Saturday, November 7 at Red Wing Park, 1398 General Booth Blvd. 
 
Help us celebrate the many accomplishments of former Virginia Beach Council Member Reba S. McClanan as we dedicate the Red Wing Park Fragrance Garden in her honor. The ceremony will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, November 7 at Red Wing Park.

Reba S. McClanan served six terms on the Virginia Beach City Council between 1980 and 2008, including a two-year term in which she serves as Vice Mayor. She represented the Princess Anne District and the Rose Hall District as a City Council Member.

The fragrance garden was created in 1972 as a project of the Virginia Beach Council of Garden Clubs to provide a public garden for sight-impaired individuals, and it contains beautiful plant materials selected for the fragrance of the foliage or blossom.  Read more...
Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures
 
The pool at Bayside Recreation Center will be closed for maintenance through October 25.
 
All Community Recreation Centers, Owl Creek Tennis Center, City parks and park facilities will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 in observance of Veteran's Day.
 
Don't forget that your membership is good at all six recreation centers!  If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center.  Use this locator to help you find one!
