Now is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful parks and natural areas that Virginia Beach has to offer.  We've got some great kid-friendly events planned throughout fall, in addition to exciting outdoor and environmental programs for the entire family.

Become an Outdoor Beach Family!
Saturday, October 17 at Munden Point Park, 2001 Pefley Lane 
Outdoor Beach FamilyOur Outdoor Beach Women program has been such a success, we wanted to get the whole family in on the fun!  Spend some time together learning the fundamentals of outdoor recreation and education from local experts at Munden Point Park. Families will choose four of the following sessions to attend: Archery Basics, Hiking and Backpacking, Kayak Quickstart, Outdoor Cooking, Fishing Basics, Shotgun, Wilderness Survival, Wildlife Watching or Biking.  The program fee of $75 covers two people and additional family members can be registered for $25 each.  Register now!

Looking for opportunities to get outdoors with younger children? 
Mom and KidsToddlers (ages 2-4) will enjoy exploring the great outdoors in our Nature's Child program.  Grab your tricycle/bike and join us as we use our senses to explore three different areas of Virginia Beach: City View Park, Bayville Farms Park and West Neck Natural Area.  Each program is one-hour and costs only $3.  Find out more!
Preschoolers (ages 3-6) will have fun learning about recreation, local wildlife and the environment in Explore Our Parks.  The program combines games, stories, crafts and live animals to get your child excited about nature.  Themes and park locations vary; cost is only $5.  Find out more!

Lumberjack 09Don't forget the STIHL Virginia Beach Lumberjack Championships arrive at Mount Trashmore Park this Saturday from 12:00 - 4:00 pm! Free admission and on-site parking available for this exciting and educational event.
In addition to the lumberjack challenges, active duty military and the Naval Special Warfare Foundation will be on-site with a Tire Flipping exhibition, flipping 100 - 200 pound tires more than 8,000 times to commemorate the number of lives lost since 9/11.
Take in the Action at the 2009 Sk8r Bash!
Saturday, October 10 at Mount Trashmore Skate Park, 310 Edwin Drive 
SK8R BashThis adrenaline-packed skateboard competition takes over the Mount Trashmore Skate Park on Saturday, October 10.
Does your child skateboard?  They can get in on the action as we host an amateur skateboard contest. Download a contest application and submit it by October 3. Registration is only $20 and includes an event t-shirt.  Register early as space is limited!

Be sure to check out the amazing SCION BMX Demo at the Vert Ramp at 12 noon and 2:00 pm where bikes and boards will throw out daring tricks mid-air. Plus, rock out to local music bands The Avenue, The Atlantic, and Carbon Jam, plus Cicero, who will be hosting their exclusive CD Release Party at the event.

Enjoy additional activities such as freestyle skating on the mobile street course and the chance to conquer the POWERade Rock Climbing Wall. The VAULT Experiential Booth will also be on hand with interactive activities for Xbox enthusiasts. Win prizes and giveaways from participating sponsors and vendors, too!
Family Fishing ClinicCatch Some Fun at the Family Fishing Clinic!
Saturday, October 3 at Munden Point Park, 2001 Pefley Lane 
Help your child tackle the basics of angling Virginia's waters by coming to our Family Fishing Clinic. You and your child will team up with experienced fishermen for guided instruction on beginning fishing skills. Fishing related games and activities will also be held throughout the morning. This event is $5 per child and limited to the first 150 youth ages 5-14 to register (advance registration is required). A parent or guardian must be present for every four children. Fishing poles, tackle, and bait will be provided, if needed. Free hot dog lunch and prize giveaway will be held at 12 noon. The event will be held rain or shine; check-in is 8:45 - 9:30 am.
Please Note Our Upcoming Facility Closures
Princess Anne Recreation Center will be closed for maintenance from Monday, September 14 to Sunday, September 20.  The pool will remain closed through September 27.
Kempsville Recreation Center will be closed for maintenance from Monday, September 28 to Sunday, October 4.  The pool will remain closed through October 11.
Bayside Recreation Center will be closed for maintenance from Monday, October 12 to Sunday, October 18.  The pool will remain closed through October 25.
Don't forget that your membership is good at all six recreation centers!  If your usual center is closed for maintenance, take the opportunity to visit another center.  Use this locator to help you find one!
