Enjoy the New Playground at Little Island Park

ParkConstruction was completed last month on a stunning new playground at Little Island Park.  The bright blue surface is actually a pour-in-place polyethylene material.  Parks and Rec's Planning, Design and Development Division needed to choose a surface that would hold up against the sand migration from the surrounding beach.  The playground surface is porous, allowing water to run through the material, and the sand is regularly vacuumed up by park maintenance staff.  Kids are sure to enjoy the state-of-the-art playground equipment including a rock climbing wall. Check out photos of the new playground and be sure to stop by soon!

Parks Partners with the Scouts

ScoutsOver the years, Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation has had the pleasure of working with many local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as they work towards the highest achievement in his/her scouting organization - Eagle Scout and Gold Award.  Scouts have completed a variety of projects to improve their communities, including; constructing foot bridges, building dog waste bag boxes, installing storage sheds, constructing agility courses in dog parks, clearing/mulching trails, planting trees, renovating horseshoe pits, fencing dumpster enclosures, erecting information boards in parks, correcting drainage problems, landscaping, building picnic tables and park benches, creating trail markings/signage and so much more!

The best part - all of these projects cost the taxpayers of Virginia Beach nothing!  Each scout is responsible for raising the funds for their project.

By the numbers:

10 - Projects completed to-date in 2009
100+ - Scouts who have completed projects with Parks & Recreation
1000s - Hours donated by scouts
0 - Cost of these projects to City taxpayers!

Do you know a scout who is working toward an Eagle or Gold Award?
