Get Ready for 2010 Summer Camps
It's time again for Therapeutic Recreation Summer Camp Registration! Get your campers signed up for another awesome summer! We will be holding registration on Saturday, March 13 at Kempsville Recreation center room 103 (TR office) from 9:00 am -12:00 pm. Non-resident registration will be accepted beginning on April 1
 Camp Explore - Age 6-21
An instructional day camp for individuals with disabilities and special needs. Campers will benefit from this 7-week program by increasing their social skills, exploring new leisure activities, developing a greater sense of independence and having fun in a positive safe environment. Benefits will be achieved through the establishment of individualized goals and objectives and by participation in classes such as sports, group games, music, drama, dance, arts and crafts, nature studies and field trips. Class instruction will be offered in individual, small and large group formats. All activities will be adapted to meet campers' needs. Campers will need to bring their lunch (meal and drink) and personal items. In addition to class instructors, camper assistants and Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) will be on site to work directly with campers.

Extended Care - This is an additional service that will offer supervised care of campers from 3:00 to 5:45 pm.
$400 ($100 deposit with registration)
 New Ventures - Age 14 - 21 This 7-week program incorporates leisure education and pre-vocational opportunities through community volunteer service and recreation participation. Participants will be given the opportunity to develop lifetime leisure skills, plan community outings and learn job skills by volunteering with various community organizations. Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation welcomes and encourages individuals with disabilities to participate in recreation programs and provides two main ways an individual can do so: Inclusion Support Services and Therapeutic Recreation Programs. Not sure what the differences are or how to access the appropriate service or program? 
We're recruiting summer staff to work with and assist children and teens with special needs in Camp Explore and New Ventures. Applications are available 
Brianna Sally graduated from Virginia Tech in May 2009. She majored in Psychology and Sociology with concentration in Crime and Deviance. Currently, Brianna is attending ODU for her Masters Degree in Special Education. Brianna has been working part time with the Therapeutic Recreation Programs for three summers at Camp Explore. As of fall 2009, Brianna has been working in the TR office helping with the "behind the scenes" details as well as assisting in programs. Her favorite part of her job is the "joy she gets from seeing our participants learn something new." Each one of their smiles brightens her day! Brianna also loves helping the participants get involved in activities with their peers.
Emily Fisher graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in June 2009 with a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology. Since the summer of 2003, Emily has been working with the Therapeutic Recreation Programs. She has worked in almost all of the TR programs as well as Camp Explore and New Ventures. As of fall 2009, Emily has been working in the TR office assisting with the day to day office responsibilities. Her favorite part of her job is "getting to see the participants enjoy life as uninhibited as possible". Emily would like to continue her education, aspiring to become a criminal psychologist.
