Fun Fact: Incredible Ace

When Robert Trent Jones redesigned the fourth hole at the Baltusrol Golf Club's Lower Course before the 1954 U.S. Open, some members thought the par 3 over a pond was unfair. He offered to play the hole along with Johnny Farrell, the club pro, and two members.

Playing from the 165-yard members tee, Mr. Farrell and the two members each hit balls on the green. Mr. Jones stepped up and swung his 4-iron. His ball landed on the green and rolled into the cup for a hole in one. Turning to the assembled members, he said: ''Gentlemen, the hole is fair. Eminently fair.''

Pro Tip: Putting

by Sue Vreeland, LPGA instructor at Red Wing Lake Golf Course

Putting Tip

Putting should be as simple and automatic as tossing a ball to a target.

Once you have a comfortable set up, spend more time looking at the hole, instead of looking at the ball.

You need to "feel" the distance with your eyes.  Try to look at something smaller than the entire hole, like a blade of grass or a speck of sand.  It will make your brain work harder.

On flat putts, the hole should be your distance marker.

If the putt is uphill, find a distance marker past the hole to give the putt more energy for the hill.

Pick a distance marker short of the hole if putting downhill.
