Being silly is a huge part of COMMUNITY BUILDING. Laughter is one way that we share our true selves with others. When we show who we truly are, we grow closer together. See for yourself: Make someone laugh today and see how much closer you feel to that person after you share that silly moment!

On his way into camp, one camper happily stopped by me on Welcome Walk to tell me , "This place feels like home to me!" I replied, "Thank you for telling me that. I agree. For so many of us, BDC is our second family." Inner confidence (pictured above) grows at much faster rate when a child feels the support of her COMMUNITY - both at home and at camp!

THIS WEEK'S BDC ANIMAL FIND: While the counselor in this photo looks like a deer in the headlights, look closely just above her head. Do you see the LIVE DEER on the hillside in the back round? In case you could not see it, we used PhotoShop to put a red circle around the visiting animal. Even the local wild life want to come be a part of BDC! Now that is COMMUNITY BUILDING in the truest sense.
This summer our BDC Camper Leaders (14-16 year old campers) have BUILT a very strong COMMUNITY within our larger camp COMMUNITY. Their growing confidence and pride in their work shows in everything that they do. These folks understand that the future of the BDC COMMUNITY lies in their hands and they embrace this responsibility with honor and joy!
FOUND!

A set of KEYS were found in the BDC parking lot with a tag that says "SIMSBURY." (We think this might be a rental house key.) If this is yours, please go to the BDC Office to claim your key home!

BDC PARKING LOT REMINDERS

Thank you in advance for keeping our busy parking lot safe for children and families. Please following these guidelines:

- Always follow the directions of the BDC Parking Attendants wearing orange vests.

- Put away your cell phone so that your full attention is on driving and parking.

- Use the Safe Path (through the trees) to stay away from cars.

- Turn off your car when you go to get your campers.

- While in the parking lot, children should remain with you (not playing with rocks in the parking lot.)

-  We are smoke free campus. Please refrain from smoking in your car while in our lot.

THANK YOU!

Hello BDC Family and Friends,

We have BUILT an incredibly strong COMMUNITY here at camp. During Week #6 we all reap the benefits that come from creating a safe and caring 'home away from home.' In our COMMUNITY, campers and staff are now comfortable yet not complacent; they are confident yet continuing to challenge themselves to grow more; they are joyful and focused on BUILDING more COMMUNITY both at BDC and around Cape Cod.

If you are just arriving at camp, here is a short list of some of the places in our larger COMMUNITY that campers have enjoyed:
Crosby Landing, Coast Guard, and Rock Harbor Beaches
Water Wizz in Wareham, MA
Animal Shelter, Brewster
Stony Brook and Orleans Elementary Schools
Nauset Middle School and Dennis Yarmouth High School Track
Willy's Gym Rock Climbing Wall
Inflatable Park
Pilgram and Crystal Lakes
Flax and Cliff Ponds
Hyannis Homeless Shelter delivering camper collected food

In addition, we have hosted Orleans Recreation Swim Program, Camp W*K, Cape Cod Sea Camps, and Wychmere Harbor Club during swim meets. We have welcomed the Brewster Fire Department to teach us more about fire safety.

We are a busy and thriving COMMUNITY - come see for yourself in person or simply enjoy the photos below. Either way, of course as always, I am wishing you abundant...

PS. At the end of this week, we wish Mariners Hill Head, Sari Pogorzeski, a fond farewell as she begins her new teaching job at a private school in Texas. Please welcome Henry Dunham, returning Family School Teacher and past BDC staff member who begins his full time duties at the end of this week as the new Mariners Hill Head. Thank you both for all of your wonderful work making our BDC COMMUNITY so strong!

Each season, BDC becomes a very energetic and close knit COMMUNITY. What sort of COMMUNITY are you part of this summer? How does your COMMUNITY BUILD support around you?

When a child feels safe and supported by their immediate COMMUNITY (like an appropriate swim level group) he/she can learn best. If a child feels scared or unsupported in his/her immediate COMMUNITY, he/she can only focus on the discomfort. BUILDING a comfortable COMMUNITY around a child allows him/her to thrive in that situation! We do this so well at BDC!

"Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language."

~ Henry James

At our STAR (Song Theater And Rhythm) Activity campers BUILD COMMUNITY within their tent group by playing a lot of improvisational theater games. They share laughter as well as practice their ability to "think on their feet." This is a skill that will serve them well in other areas of their lives! What do you practice for fun that also helps you in your life?

While it may be hard to see in this picture...these campers measured our physical COMMUNITY not in inches or feet but by teenage girls connected head to toe! BDC sits on 4.5 acres nestled on the edge of thousands of acres of Nickerson State Park - how many PEOPLE does it take to cover our campus? Ask an Admirals Hill camper for the answer...

This is what a pinky shake promise looks like. BUILDING COMMUNITY sometimes takes a leap of faith and a whole lot of trust. When you are with people who care about you, make sure to take advantage of the opportunity to push yourself just outside of your comfort zone - this trust is one key to BUILDING a strong COMMUNITY!

Thank you Firefighter Glen, for visiting camp this week! You brought the larger Brewster COMMUNITY to BDC when you drove the little fire truck here and taught our younger campers about feeling safe. What a blast our campers had using the pumper truck hose to actually aim water  at a cone!
GENERAL BDC REMINDERS

Not sure what the Camper Expectations are at BDC?
Go here to read BDC '12 Camper's Guide.

Remember to pack a HUGE lunch with lots healthy snacks. Campers burn nearly twice the amount of calories while playing at camp than they do sitting at a desk in school.

Get lots of sleep. Most campers need more sleep in the summer because their bones are growing much faster now than in the winter due to all of the vitamin D from healthy exposure to the sun.

Wishing you and your family
Courage, Hope, Good Spirit, and Peace!
