FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Guild Members,

As our summer season draws to an end, and before we start gearing up for our traditional busy fall schedule, I'd like to update everyone on the exciting happenings at the Guild.

This season's extended Summer Camp was a complete success.  Weekly sessions full of happy campers and interesting projects brought a wonderful energy to our barn galleries and studio.  The themed weeks included fine art--collage, painting and three-dimensional mask making to elaborate fairy houses to fashion illustration and accessory design to fiber arts and knitting--the mix was dynamic and the feedback from both campers and parents was just great.  As a by-product, the resulting traffic through the galleries and the Treetops Exhibition was record-breaking.  Hat's off to our camp director Mary Harold who worked so hard overseeing the many details involved with these camps.  Both Mary and Pam Stoddart put together an amazing program that we definitely plan to repeat again next summer.  The new fall session of classes will be posted in the next few weeks.

Under the direction of Cindi Mullins, our Satellite Gallery program is flourishing.  In order to grow it further, however, we need more volunteers to help manage the program.  As it stands now, we have had to turn away some requests from community businesses and venues as we do not have the manpower to broaden our reach.  Our gallery committee headed by Kim Hanna is also looking for volunteers to assist with installing exhibitions.  If you are interested in either of these committees, please contact our director of volunteers, Mary Louise O'Connell at mloconnell@sbcglobal.net.

Gearing up for the fall season, we are looking forward to our Annual Juried Show and Festive Home.  (Details on Juried show are posted on our website and in this e-blast.)  New this year, Festive Home will be opening a few weeks earlier on November 21 with an opening party on November 20.  The show will run through December 20th and it is a great time to volunteer time at the guild during our extended gallery hours.  Another opportunity to contribute will be to paint one of our stenciled canvases. These stencils--this year's theme will be teapots and tea cups--will be sold for $50 and all proceeds will go back to the Guild.  Artists who donate their work will be rewarded with a Summer Show (unthemed) in July/August 2010. These canvases will be ready to be picked up during receiving for our Juried Show.  Looking forward, we are working on our 2010 schedule which will be sure to include the popular Bedlam Member Show as well as a major themed Member Show in May.  The positive energy of the summer looks to continue with another wonderful year with plenty of opportunities to show member's work.

Showcasing our members work in a professional space is very important to all of us.  A major change is in store as our doors open this September.  Our visitors will be greeted by a brand new reception area.  Board member Mary Louise O'Connell brought in a large donation from the Seven Bridges Foundation that was slated for this renovation of the reception area.  Guild coordinator Joan Isaac, Kim Hanna and Mary Louise O'Connell spent many hours working with a contractor to design this new area that will provide a more efficient work space and a sleeker profile in keeping with the galleries.  Efforts to finance more capital improvements through grants and donations will continue throughout the year.  High up on our wish list is new track lighting for the galleries and additional classroom/studio space in the basement.

Finally, our last bit of very good news, we are extremely happy to announce that we were awarded $10,000 ($5,000 for 2009 and $5,000 for 2010) from the Richardson Fund.  This grant is to be allocated towards general operating costs and will be a big help in keeping our doors open.  A big thank you to board member Betsy Brand and grant writer extraordinaire Patty Short for spearheading the application.

As our outgoing communication efforts continue to improve with our new Constant Contact email blasts (a giant thank you to our talented graphics chair Liz Marcus who designs and manages this very important tool), we also need to hear from you, our members.  Without your input and help, the Guild cannot continue to grow and improve every year.  As a volunteer for many years, I can attest that while I've put in many hours, I have grown personally and professionally in a way that would not have been possible without the Guild.  I invite everyone to join me and our talented hard-working board in growing our art center and artist community.

Here's to a positive, energetic and inspiring fall season--and, sowing those seeds of opportunity.

3 Cheers,

Rachel Volpone

ps--the idea of Bedlam's hang-your-own art came from a conversation with an incoming artist for the Juried Show in the guild parking lot!  We love to hear creative ideas from our members.
