Spring Stream Clean-up
Our fifth stream clean-up of Pike's Branch showed how far we have come in improving our creek. In our first clean-up in 2006,
we filled an entire commercial truck with old tires, rusted spring cleanupout bicycles, a moped, washing machine parts, old signs, and more. This time when our students spread out over a mile of the stream, the difference was dramatic. While we worked just as hard, what we cleaned out of the creek could fit in the back of a pickup, and was mostly made up of small plastic items.

Continued thanks to the people at Atlas Hauling who have worked with us every time to haul away the trach and recycle everything possible--at no charge.
Student Fundraising

It was Middle School Math day at the ballpark where 3,500 kidsconcessions-Quentin, Christine, Willow came to enjoy a field trip and practice their math skills--and it seemed like all 3,500 of them lined up for hot dogs, french fries, chicken strips, nachos, pretzels, and sodas. Most of our seniors and juniors, a few parents, and teachers worked hard in the main concession stand cooking, selling, serving, and cleaning.

We made an awesome team, with everyone stepping in where needed to keep things going smoothly and the lines moving quickly. We also left the concession area cleaner than when we arrived!

We earned 10% of the gross, which will go towards each class' senior trip.

Not-So-Silent Auction 2009
stone mansion
The Not-So-Silent Auction Committee is busy planning for the Auction on May 14th from 7-9 pm at Stone Mansion off Telegraph Rd. Come and bring your family and friends to help support the Howard Gardner School Scholarship Fund!  As is our tradition now, there is no entrance fee for this fun-filled evening of Food and  Fellowship with the Howard Gardner community. Participate in a raffle for $500 in groceries, bid on auction items, and contribute to the 100% tax deductible "Fund a Scholar" event. Lots of wonderful donations are coming in for both our live and silent auction, so bring your checkbooks (and a generous spirit!).  See you there!
Senior Intern: JT Tyler
Third trimester, our seniors either go on the senior trip or complete a full-time internship. Having been interested in law enforcement for a long time, JT decided to intern with the Fairfax County Police Department. Not only will JT learn about how a police department operates, but he will also have a chance to see whether he wants to pursue a career in criminal justice.

Building Update...  from Katherine

We are almost finished with the Site Plan process! We will be breaking ground soon and are still on track for a fall opening.

Thank you to everyone who has helped us get to this point! Our Capital Campaign continues, though, as we will need furniture, equipment,  carpeting, etc.in order to have a fully-functional classroom environment for our students in September.

The Howard Gardner School is a small, progressive independent high school for college-bound learners in Alexandria, Virginia. With a focus on environmental science and the arts, the school's mission is to help bright, creative non-traditional learners use their unique strengths to thrive academically, intellectually and emotionally. Hands-on learning and weekly field studies keep students active and involved, and internships let students explore their interests through work.
