119 Gallery seeks proposals from artists for a mural project on the façade of the gallery. This is the second annual mural competition. Five previous artists' proposals have been executed in July 2011, 2010, 2009 and 2008.
Project Description: 119 Gallery seeks to create its fifth public mural at the gallery's highly visible location at the corner of Grand Street and Chelmsford Street in Lowell. The surface of the building is white painted brick with approximate dimensions of 31 by 9 feet. The gallery is on a busy corridor to the downtown (Route 110), with extensive vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Our murals are our most public, creative expression we produce each year. Last year's mural on Chelmsford Street infused a colorful, vibrant energy in our neighborhood. Our murals elicit positive feedback from all ages, and are recognized city wide as outstanding public art. This year, we look forward to wrapping a new mural around the corner of our wedge-shaped flat-iron building to the Grand Street facade, visible from 110 and on Google Map's street view of the gallery. (See inset).
The content of the mural should be appropriate to the site and mission of the gallery. This is an open theme, but artists are encouraged to consider work that reflects the character, history and diversity of the gallery and its role in the community.
