Lowell, MA--Video Lux, Ego Sum Lux Video! (I see light, I am the light I see!),
by Jim Jeffers, winner of Best in Show in 119 Gallery's 2011 Juried Exhibit.
This solo exhibition showcases a body of work created from 2005-2012, since Jim moved to Lowell, MA. The work spans media and includes two dimensional art, sculpture-video hybrids, performance (and performance documents), inflatable plastic sculpture, and video. The exhibit reception is March 3, from 3-6pm. There will be a performance night in conjunction with the exhibition with performances by Jim Jeffers with others, Friday, March 16, from 7-10pm.
Jim Jeffers is an intermedia artist working with computer mediation, web-art, performance, photography, and video in conjunction with conventional media. Exploring cultural material and material culture, Jeffers finds the meta-spiritual and psychoactive incredibly important and incredibly elusive in making art. He is interested in many things, particularly Swiss Army knives, wristwatches, and global fairness.
A prolific artist, Jeffers exhibits regularly in public and non-profit venues, both nationally and internationally. He has participated in over 70 group exhibitions since earning his M.F.A. degree in 2000. His last solo exhibition, Fortress of Multitude-- and other fantabiographies, was at the MEME Gallery, Cambridge, MA in 2011. Jeffers' forthcoming interactive print/web artist project SlowCyborg will appear in Public Art Dialog Journal (Routledge Press), March 2012.
Jeffers earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Art from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Studio Art from the Steinhardt School of Education, New York University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Kresge College, University of California, Santa Cruz.
Jim is an Assistant Professor of Art and Design at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and also the Head of the Web Art & Design area within the Art Department at UML. He is a founding member of the New Media Caucus of the College Art Association, and is Treasurer of the Board of Directors, and Associate Editor of Media-N: The Journal of the New Media Caucus. He served as Education Chair on the Board of Directors of the Printmaking Center of New Jersey, and is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of 119 Gallery, Lowell, MA-- the area's only non-profit gallery dedicated to new media, contemporary art, new music, and performance. In 2009, Jeffers cofounded Printer on Prescott Arts Research Collaborative and Artist Studios, in the heart of historic downtown Lowell, MA, where he currently maintains his studio. Jim lives in Lowell, MA, with his wife Jean, and their rabbit Logan.
