Can You Hear Me Now? A celebration of historical successes and failures in communications technology
|
The AstroDime Transit Authority builds prototypes for
future and imagined communications technologies.
The
AstroDime Transit Authority (ATA) will celebrate historical (and
inevitable) successes and failures of communications technologies. "Can
You Hear Me Now?" commemorates the first Trans-Atlantic cable and examines
positive outcomes from failure. New and nearly new ATA artifacts will crisscross
119 Gallery. Taking inspiration from the best of telecommunications history,
ATA will re-commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first transatlantic cable
connection.
Following an historical conversation between President Buchanan and Queen
Victoria on August 16, 1858, the first transatlantic cable lasted 15 days.
Eight years later, it was reconnected. Last September, ATA conducted a
re-enactment of this historical event on Bumpkin Island.
This successful effort to connect Bumpkin to Hull with our ingenious tin can phones and
human repeaters demonstrated ATA's ideal: telecommunications discovery in
action! April 24 to May 23. Reception May 9, 3 p.m. to be followed by a screening of InTransit V4 from ATA.
