This Weekend @ 119 Gallery
independent print and film

Gareth Hinds " Beowolf" (c) 1999
LOWELL- Stop by 119 Gallery this Sat. Nov 1 for an all day exploration of independent print, video and music. Festivities start at 3 p.m. with the opening reception for our latest exhibition, 'Zine Art.

'Zines, short for magazine, are independently created publications that forgo glossy celebrity banter to focus on alternative thoughts and ideas. The tools used to create 'zines haven't changed much over the last few decades- glue sticks, staples and photocopy machines are still the tools wielded by 'zine makers. They like it that way.

We'll have plenty of 'zines on hand to peruse and purchase- covering everything from graphic Shakespearean novels to transgender comics. Artists will be available to sign copies of their works.

At 8 p.m. we will be screening INtransit 4: Glitch. It's the latest installment of film collective Astrodime Transit Authority's video 'zine series. This edition focuses on the glitches that can occur when communicating through technology.

How does the loss or corruption of data alter information as it reaches us? What happens to the message when we become aware of the medium? When is a glitch not just a glitch? Digital decay, lost signals, system errors, rolloff, dropout, static, interference, noise, data loss, corruption, malfunction. Don't store your DVDs in direct sun. Walk through a wall to get to the Minus World. Can you hear me now? Remember when all of your vacation film went through the x-ray at the airport? When technology fails, what is lost and what is gained?

At 10 p.m. music will be turned on its head by Id m Theft able. This one man act is a performance in the tradition of the Dada sound poets using found objects to create musical accompaniment to nonverbal poetry. The portland Maine artist has played all over the United States and Europe with past performances including everything from teddy bear CPR to amplified gargling.

At 10:30 catch a performance by Birdorgan, an immediate free improvisational experience that's "music as a result of miscommunication" according to band member Walter Wright. Birdorgan is Dei Xhrist on record players and vocals, Marc Bisson on prepared guitar, vocals and amplified glass plate, Mike Fun on modular synthesizer and theramin, Mike Dailey on drums and treated guitar and Walter Wright on modular synthesizer and laptop.
