Gov. Perdue's new education agenda puts focus on readiness
The North Carolina New Schools Project applauds the announcement this morning of Governor Beverly Perdue's vision for 21st century education in North Carolina. Speaking to a joint session of the state's educational governing boards in Kannapolis, Perdue outlined a framework to take on the state's educational challenges with a focus on the goal of preparing every student to be ready for college or career after graduating from high school.
Rallying educators, business leaders and the public to the charge of better preparing North Carolina and its workforce for the challenges of the 21st century, Perdue urged everyone to do their part to ensure that North Carolina continues to lead the way in educational innovation and improving educational access, attainment and the development of new skills needed in the economy of today and the future. She addressed members of the State Board of Education, the UNC Board of Governors, the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges and the N.C. Independent Colleges & Universities Board of Directors.
"We must re-focus our state's public schools on a single goal," she said. "Every kid -- no matter where he or she lives in North Carolina -- must graduate from high school with what it really takes to succeed in a career, in a two- or four-year college or technical training. That means no more losing out on jobs that require more than low skills and no more remedial courses in college. Graduates will have what it really takes."

NCNSP welcomes Perdue's call to action and looks forward to continuing our work to accelerate systemic, sustainable innovation in secondary schools across North Carolina so that, in time, every high school in North Carolina graduates every student ready for college, careers and life in the society and economy of the 21st century.
