Greetings!
Summer is the time for family travel. Like your pet, Hobbes, our Wheaten Terrier, is an important part of our family. We decided to go camping with our dog and everyone had fun. As we prepared for the trip, I packed for Hobbes too - he isn't good about gathering his stuff. The following made our trip easy and enjoyable by all:
-
Be sure your pet has current contact information on their collar or harness. If they are chipped, have the agency's phone number and pet's identification number with you.
-
If you pet is on medication, be sure to pack it. Have your vet contact information for emergencies.
-
When traveling by vehicle, be sure your pet is secure in a crate, with a seatbelt, or some other means. Recently I worked with a person whose dog bolted being involved in vehicle accident. Fortunately the dog was found safe within a few days.
-
Bring water from home for your pet. Different water may affect him. If you are traveling by plane, buy spring water at your destination. If camping, freezing the water in bottle works great to keep the freezer cold and then your pet gets cold water when the ice melts.
-
If traveling by plane, check with the airlines' website for travel restrictions and requirements including health certificate. Airlines restrict animal travel based on temperatures. Be sure to check with information before your purchase your tickets and finalize your plans.
-
Bring a few favorite toys for your pet. Bring a new toy in case she gets antsy or bored.
-
Bring your pet's food or be sure you can get the same food at your destination.
-
Please keep your pet on leash.
-
Tell your pet you are going on a special vacation and you are excited they will travel with you. Assure them they will be safe.
-
Relax and have fun! Take lots of photos.
Have a wonderful July! Please take some time to relax and enjoy your pets and family.
Take care,
Elaine
