Design Tip of the Month featuring... Elizabeth McIntosh
Hanging Artwork and Photos~The best way to finish off your newly designed room or spruce up an existing space is to add artwork. Hanging just a few colorful prints or meaningful family photos can make your space more personalized and complete. The first step is to decide where to hang your artwork; over the sofa, above a buffet or console table, between a pair of chairs or in that empty space in the hall. A common mistake is hanging your artwork too high. In most situations, the center of the picture should be eye level to the average adult. When you are placing a picture above a sofa or table, it should be four to six inches above that sofa or table, If you are hanging a pair of prints next to each other, you should hang them a frame width apart for a proportional look. If your frame is four inches, hang the pictures four inches apart. When you are hanging multiple pictures in a collage they can be free flowing and individualized. The important thing to remember is to keep the collection balanced. Once you have found your perfect place, mark the wall with a pencil where the top center of the picture will be. Measure the distance from the top of the frame to the hanging wire or hook. Make a new mark that distance down from your original mark. This is where you will place your nail or the hook part of a picture anchor. Secure your picture, make sure it's level, step back and enjoy your new wall hanging!
