Enhancing Student Safety on Campus
Marc Rubner, Blackboard Transact
Although the number of criminal offenses on post secondary campuses has declined over the past several years (according to the US Department of Education), a number of high-profile incidents have forced school safety officers to look anew at ways to maintain a safe environment for students, faculty and staff.
As a start, many school safety experts recommend enhancing student/faculty awareness and raising the collective safety IQ of campus personnel. Some common initiatives along these lines include:
* Establishing a campus safety education program for all students, faculty and staff.
* Establishing a code of conduct for students, faculty and staff that emphasizes a non-violent environment.
* Establishing a zero-tolerance policy for violence on campus.
* Establishing peer-to-peer volunteer service networks like campus walk-along services and call-a-ride hotlines.
