Paying it Forward

A Story of One from the Salvation Army

Alton has deep ties with The Salvation Army, beginning in his childhood.  His grandfather was an Elder in the Salvation Army church in Lubbock where Alton attended Sunday school.  Later, during the early 1940's, Alton's family was able to reclaim financial stability after staying at the Amarillo Salvation Army for several days while his father searched for a job.

Alton has had many positive experiences with The Salvation Army.  He has seen first-hand how small gestures go a long way.  These experiences have given Alton reason to give back.

In 2005, Alton began volunteering following the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He is now  an active volunteer who works daily at The Salvation Army in Lubbock. Alton is a member of the Advisory Board, Chairman of the Program Committee and a Disaster Team member. Alton works behind the scenes to ensure the needs of the community are met. The Salvation Army has given Alton a wonderful sense of purpose and a new outlook on life.

Some of Alton's most memorable moments occurred while on location with the Disaster Team. He describes these times as "tangible proof that the efforts of The Salvation Army change lives of individuals in need. You can see people receive the help they desperately need."

A particular instance stands out in Alton's mind while he thinks back on his time with the Disaster Team. While volunteering to help the victims in south Texas after Hurricane Dolly, a young man and his family approached the Emergency Response Vehicle in search of assistance. Alton knew he was volunteering that day for a reason, to help this family get back on their feet. The family that day reminded Alton of his own family, and how The Salvation Army provided them with vital assistance during a period of great need.
