2-1-1 Big Bend News

September 2012

Greetings!  ,
Randy Photo
Randy Nicklaus, President

In September our hotlines have remained busy with callers asking for help with a variety of issues.  We continue to see steady call rates on all of our hotlines including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline that we answer for North Florida.
We celebrated Suicide Prevention Awareness Week in early September by conducting a two-day ASIST training for staff and community members.  Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is an internationaly known training curriculum that we offer twice a year.  Then, on September 22 we assisted with a suicide prevention awareness walk at FAMU.  Proceeds from that walk will benefit our hotline services.
Our fall training class for hotline volunteers began in early September.  Thirty two trainees were selected for the class.  The next class will begin in January.  Pass the word to anyone who may be interested in applying to work as a volunteer hotline counselor.  The training is excellent!
2-1-1 Big Bend will be contributing volunteers to help with the Tallahassee Sunrise Rotary Club's Brewfest on November 3.  Last year Sunrise Rotary made a significant contribution to our agency from the 2012 Brewfest proceeds.  We appreciate Sunrise and Brewfest!  If you have a chance to attend Brewfest, please do!

 2-1-1 Big Bend

Board of Directors Spotlight

Al Pasini

Chairman of the Board

Executive Director

Tallahassee Downtown Improvement Authority

1.  How long have you been a board member?   I have served on the board of directors since 2009.  I served as Treasurer in 2010, and Vice Chair in 2011.

2. What  is the most rewarding aspect of serving as a board member for 2-1-1 Big Bend?

The most rewarding aspect of serving on the board is to see the hard work and accomplishments of such a dedicated staff.  I love attending the staff appreciation dinners to see how motivated and excited they are about their jobs and what they are accomplishing for the community.  Unfortunately, I had to miss last year's event due to a conflict but I missed the staff's enthusiasm.   It has been a hard year for Randy and staff this year due to the loss of a state grant through no fault of the organization.  The loss of funds because of budget and policy directives from the state was hard on everyone's morale from staff to board members.  Randy Nicklaus took the brunt of the responsibility and I know, having been in positions like his in the past, reducing staff is never easy.  It is one of the few work concerns that you take home at night and dwell on.  No one wants anyone to suffer.  For the need to reduce staff, for any reason is very very difficult.  211 Big Bend will move on - leaner ... and harder working.  To the staff - take a deep breath ... and enjoy your life and work.

 3. What is one thing you would want people to know about 2-1-1 Big Bend?

I would like everyone to know how important 211 Big Bend is to the greater community we live in.   As a board member and familiar with the mission of 211 BB, I cannot imagine a community without such an important function.  With all of the stress of economics, military service, health and parenting needs, single parents, and abusive situations, 211 Big Bend fills an important community need the impacts virtually everyone in today's world.  I would also want people to know that more needs to be done in a world of ever shrinking resources.  As a board member, I feel I am never doing enought to assist this great organization in identifying potential donors and resoruces for this much needed organization.  Please join me in reaching out to everyone and explain the mission and the overwhelming importance of keeping 211 Big Bend viable for our community in the long term.
