2-1-1 Big Bend News

July 2012

Greetings!  ,
Randy Photo
Randy Nicklaus, President

Summertime means vacations and summer camps for the kids in many families.  I hope you are able to enjoy some R&R this summer!
Our counselors are available 24/7 to help you and others find resources you may need during the summer season.  For example, we are helping parents find Summer Food Breakspots for their kids.  These free food sites help families who normally take advantage of the free lunches at schools during the school year.  The Department of Agriculture sponsors this Summer Food Program.  Call 2-1-1 for more information.
Please remember to keep your personal disaster plan updated.  We are in the early stages of Hurricane Season and we've already experienced TS Debby that flooded Wakulla, Franklin and several other counties in June.  If you know anyone that needs help during a disaster recovery, tell them about 2-1-1.  We can refer to many different community resources, including those that are temporarily put in place after a disaster.

 COAD - Joining Together to

Help Those in Need

Residents in Florida's Gulf Coast counties are still cleaning up from Tropical Storm Debby.  It will be a long process.  Through Big Bend COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster), many area agencies, including the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, Volunteer Leon, and Volunteer Wakulla, have joined together to assist those affected by the storm.  2-1-1 Big Bend serves as the lead agency for disaster information and referral, and is assisting in identifying and matching those in need with emergency resources.

Many callers were assisted during July with referrals to organizations that cleaned up their homes, provided emergency supplies and offered financial assistance.

If your well was flooded, you should have it tested by your health department or a state certified laboratory for water contamination.

This year our services are more important than ever due to the effects of Tropical Storm Debby that swept through the area.
