2-1-1 Big Bend News |
March 2012 |
Greetings! ,
 | Randy Nicklaus, President |
In 2011 more than 16.6 million people were assisted by 2-1-1 hotlines through out the United States, including 1.1 million in Florida. There are now more than 240 of these hotlines that serve 87 percent of the U.S. population.
As we celebrated National 2-1-1 Day last month, the Florida Alliance of Information and Referral Services (FLAIRS) approved two new 2-1-1 certification applications. As a result, all Florida counties will have access to a 2-1-1 service by this summer. We have been working on this goal of 100 percent coverage in Florida for more than a decade and we finally achieved it!
I want to thank the Tallahassee Democrat editorial board for their support of Helpline 2-1-1 in their recent Our Opinion column. Other media outlets (e.g., WCTV) also provided coverage of National 2-1-1 Day and several agencies and businesses displayed our 2-1-1 yard signs in February as a show of support.
Thanks to everyone who helps increase community awareness of these important 2-1-1 services.
P.S. Watch for promotions of our April 21st fundraiser - A Night in the Tropics. It will be a lot of fun so please join us! |

Board Member Spotlight

Wealth Management Advisor
Merrill Lynch

- How long have you been a board member?
I have been a board member since July 2010 - What is the most rewarding aspect of serving as a board member? The most rewarding aspect of serving as a board member in my view is understanding that the work of the board can have truly positive long-term impact on the organization and on the people who are helped by 2-1-1 Big Bend.
- What is one thing you would want people to know about 2-1-1 Big Bend? One thing I would like people to know is how many thousands of people are helped each year in the eight county area served by 2-1-1 Big Bend; this is a wonderful reflection of the hard work and dedication of the employees and volunteers who work at the agency.

Step Up For Students
What if your child could receive a K-12 scholarship?
Step Up For Students is a nonprofit organization that administers the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship for low-income students (K-12). The scholarship program was created by the Florida Legislature in 2001 and is funded by corporations that receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for their contributions. Many families still don't know the option exists, but Florida has the nation's largest scholarship program giving low-income families the ability to choose the school that best meets their children's needs.
For additional information please visit www.StepUpForStudents.org or call 877-735-7837.
New families will be invited to start applying in March. Please visit the site to enter your information to be notified when you can begin applying.
