2-1-1 Big Bend News |
February 2012 |
Greetings! ,
 | Randy Nicklaus, President |
On February 11, 2012 (2/11)we will be celebrating the 9th Anniversary of the launch of our 2-1-1 three digit number. How time flies!
Before we began using this easy to remember number, we had to advertise a ten digit number plus a toll free number for a some counties in our service area. Now, by dialing 2-1-1 in all eight Big Bend counties you can connect to our 24/7 hotline. At the same time as our 2-1-1 launch in 2003, we changed our agency name from Telephone Counseling and Referral Service to 2-1-1 Big Bend. That made it easier to promote our services and create brand recognition.
Since then, we have doubled calls to our local hotline and helped thousands of people with mental health and human service concerns, including suicide prevention and crisis intervention.
Help us spread the word and let more people know about the services of Helpline 2-1-1. We have yard signs that you can put in front of your business, school, job site or home. During the week of February 6-11 we want everyone to see a sign somewhere in our community! If you want to help us put up a sign, please contact Sheila Horne, Development Director, at 850-617-6323 or development@211bigbend.org.
Thanks for your help to promote 2-1-1!
P.S. If you want to have a great time and support our hotline programs, please join us on April 21, 2012 for our annual fundraising event - A Night in the Tropics! For more information check out our website or send us an email. |

Community Partner of the Month
Alliance of Information and Referral Systems

AIRS is our professional association that took the lead along with the United Way of America (now United Way Worldwide) and others to petition the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to designate the three digit 2-1-1 number for community information and referral. Because of that effort, the FCC adopted the 2-1-1 number for that purpose in July 2000. There are only eight precious three digit or N11 numbers available for use in the nation so that was a very significant step recognizing the critical importance of our work.
Since then, 254 organizations have initiated the 2-1-1 program and more than 16 million calls a year are answered by 2-1-1 hotlines throughout the United States and Canada. About 87 percent of the United States population has access to a 2-1-1 hotline.
AIRS promotes professionalism through its agency accreditation program and staff certification exams. Annual training conferences are held along with webinars and other online training about best practices. These services assist 2-1-1s and all information and referral organizations to provide high quality hotline counseling and information and referral services to their respective communities.
2-1-1 Big Bend is accredited by AIRS and thirteen of our staff members are AIRS certified. 2-1-1 Big Bend staff are also involved with AIRS committees both nationally and in Florida.
Thank you AIRS for your leadership on behalf of 2-1-1 and community information & referral!

Through the BEST Project, the United Way of the Big Bend is leading an effort to help lower-to-modest income residents preserve and increase their financial assets. The BEST Project, along with community partners, serves residents of the Big Bend through proactive and collaborative solutions to improve their long-term financial stability and quality of life.
We believe that it pays dividends to give people the tools they need to become and remain self-sufficient. We're partnering with financial professionals to teach people about money management. We're helping people apply for the earned income tax credit, which means bigger tax refunds for the people who need it most. And we're encouraging people to have positive relationships with mainstream financial institutions.
Dial 2-1-1 or visit the BESTproject.org to find a VITA (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance) site near you.
Sites will be open January 21 to April 17, 2012 |
