June 2011

Dear  ,

Randy Nicklaus, President
Thanks for subscribing to our 2-1-1 Big Bend electronic newsletter.  If you have any suggestions for future editions please send me an email.

As we begin the summer, several local nonprofits, businesses and government agencies are experiencing budget cuts and employee layoffs.  Our hotline counselors are participating with Workforce Plus and others with onsite meetings to share how we can assist displaced workers.  For more information or support, please let others know they can call our 2-1-1 hotline services anytime.  Because life is 24/7 so are we!

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Build a Suicide-safer Community

Join us July 8 and 9 for ASIST training. The workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. More than one million caregivers have participated in this two-day, highly interactive, practical workshop nationwide. Enjoy small group discussions and skills practice based on adult-learning principles. You must participate in both days. The cost is $150 and includes a workbook and lunch. To learn more, contact our Training Coordinator Jocelyne Fliger at (850) 617-6320 or trainingcoord@211BigBend.org.

Transition Success

Support for Public Employees

This week 2-1-1 Big Bend, the Agency for Workforce Innovation, the Florida Department of Education, the Social Security Administration, Tallahassee Community College and WORKFORCEplus hosted Transition Forums to provide direct, onsite assistance to public employees impacted by reductions in the state budget.  Each organization provided information about area support, training and reemployment services.  The feedback from the group was wonderful!  Many folks were encouraged and grateful for the support of these organizations. This is a testament to what can happen when community stakeholders take action. Kudos to these groups!

Taxonomy Now a Little Less Taxing

For the past eight months our Information and Referral Team has been updating the taxonomy terms for all 3,000 programs (1,100 for Helpline 2-1-1) in our resource database. This national indexing standard makes it easier for counselors to quickly access relevant information when helping a caller. By training staff and volunteers to use the same search terms, we improve our service to the community!

Keep up the awesome work team I&R!
